(Web Desk) – Iran were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in an entertaining FIFA World Cup Group G encounter after coming from behind on two occasions.
Team Melli entered the tournament amid a series of challenges, including visa issues, last-minute changes to their training arrangements and political controversy surrounding the team’s participation. Demonstrations by opponents of Iran’s ruling government took place outside the stadium, while supporters inside displayed anti-government symbols despite FIFA regulations prohibiting political messages.
Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei had urged his players to ignore the surrounding distractions, but his side fell behind in the seventh minute. Veteran striker Chris Wood controlled a long pass before setting up Elijah Just, who finished a flowing move with an impressive volley.
Iran nearly responded through Mehdi Taremi, whose long-range effort struck the post. They eventually found an equaliser in the 32nd minute when Ramin Rezaeian reacted quickest to convert a rebound after New Zealand failed to clear their lines.
Ali Nemati thought he had given Iran the lead just before halftime, but his header was ruled out for offside.
New Zealand regained the advantage 10 minutes into the second half. Elijah Just scored his second goal of the match after combining neatly with Chris Wood following a turnover in midfield.
Iran again responded positively, with Mohammad Mohebi heading home from Rezaeian’s precise cross in the 64th minute to level the scores at 2-2.
The final half hour saw Iran dominate possession and create several opportunities, but poor finishing and determined New Zealand defending denied them a winning goal.
The result leaves Iran facing a tougher path to the knockout stage as they continue their pursuit of a first-ever World Cup progression beyond the group phase. However, with fellow Group G rivals Egypt and Belgium also drawing their opening match, qualification remains firmly within reach.
For New Zealand, the wait for a first-ever World Cup victory continues, although the spirited performance earned them a valuable point against one of Asia’s strongest teams.
