Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei had urged his players to ignore the surrounding distractions, but his side fell behind in the seventh minute. Veteran striker Chris Wood controlled a long pass before setting up Elijah Just, who finished a flowing move with an impressive volley.

New Zealand regained the advantage 10 minutes into the second half. Elijah Just scored his second goal of the match after combining neatly with Chris Wood following a turnover in midfield.
Iran again responded positively, with Mohammad Mohebi heading home from Rezaeian’s precise cross in the 64th minute to level the scores at 2-2.
The final half hour saw Iran dominate possession and create several opportunities, but poor finishing and determined New Zealand defending denied them a winning goal.
The result leaves Iran facing a tougher path to the knockout stage as they continue their pursuit of a first-ever World Cup progression beyond the group phase. However, with fellow Group G rivals Egypt and Belgium also drawing their opening match, qualification remains firmly within reach.
For New Zealand, the wait for a first-ever World Cup victory continues, although the spirited performance earned them a valuable point against one of Asia’s strongest teams.
