HONG KONG (Sports Desk) – Pakistan’s emerging squash star Umeer Arif has won the Under-17 title at the Hong Kong Junior Squash Open, defeating England’s Luke McBride 3-2 in a fiercely contested final.

Umeer produced a determined performance to overcome McBride in five games, winning the championship match 4-11, 11-6, 11-5, 9-11, 11-4.

The Pakistani youngster made a difficult start to the final, dropping the opening game 4-11 as McBride established an early advantage. Umeer, however, quickly regained his composure and responded strongly in the second game, winning it 11-6.

He continued his momentum in the third game, securing an 11-5 victory to move within one game of the title.

McBride refused to surrender and fought back in the fourth game. The English player won the game 11-9 to level the contest at 2-2 and force a decisive fifth game.

With the title on the line, Umeer maintained his focus and produced his strongest squash of the match. He controlled the decisive game and won it 11-4, completing a 3-2 victory and securing the Under-17 crown.

The victory marks another important achievement for Umeer, who has already gained international experience representing Pakistan at major junior competitions.

He has represented Pakistan at both the World Junior Squash Championship and the Asian Junior Squash Championship, giving him valuable exposure against some of the leading young players from around the world.

Umeer is also a fellow of the Bilquis and Abdul Razak Dawood Foundation, which supports young sporting talent and provides opportunities for promising athletes.

His latest success in Hong Kong is expected to further strengthen his credentials as one of Pakistan’s emerging junior squash players.

The final also demonstrated the competitive nature of junior squash at the international level, with Umeer and McBride exchanging momentum throughout the match. After losing the first game, Umeer showed the ability to adjust his game and regain control, while McBride responded by taking the fourth game and keeping the contest alive.

The decisive fifth game ultimately proved to be the difference. Umeer avoided allowing the match to slip away after McBride’s comeback and maintained his concentration to close out the championship.

Pakistan has a long and distinguished history in international squash, having produced several world-class players who have made a significant impact on the sport. The country’s junior programme continues to provide a pathway for young players to gain international experience and compete against athletes from leading squash nations.

For Umeer, the Hong Kong title provides an important boost at a formative stage of his career. Success at junior level can provide players with confidence and valuable experience before they transition into senior international competitions.

The victory is also significant for Pakistan’s squash community as it highlights the potential of the country’s younger generation. Competing successfully against international opponents at major junior events can help players develop the technical, tactical and mental qualities required at senior level.

Umeer’s five-game victory over McBride therefore represents more than just a tournament win. It is another step in his development as an international squash player and adds to Pakistan’s record of producing competitive talent in the sport.

With his experience at the World and Asian Junior Championships and now an international title in Hong Kong, Umeer will look to build on the achievement and continue his progress on the junior squash circuit.

His performance in the final — particularly his recovery after losing the opening game and his composure in the deciding game — underlined his ability to handle pressure and fight back in a closely contested match.

The Under-17 title gives Umeer another notable achievement to add to his developing career and will provide encouragement as he targets further success for himself and Pakistan in international junior squash.
