Students in India’s Jharkhand state escalate protests over alleged recruitment exam fraud, demanding cancellations, investigations, and reforms to restore confidence in government hiring.
RANCHI (Dunya News) – Hundreds of students marched towards the Jharkhand state assembly on Monday, intensifying protests over alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations and demanding major reforms in the testing system.
The demonstrations in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, began on July 29 after student groups accused authorities of failing to ensure transparency in competitive examinations conducted for government jobs.
Several protesters, including student leader Devendra Nath Mahto, have launched a hunger strike, with activists calling for cancellation of disputed examinations and a federal investigation into the role of private companies involved in conducting recruitment tests.
Mahto said the movement was aimed at changing the examination system and ending what protesters described as unfair practices affecting thousands of job seekers.
Heavy police deployment was witnessed near the state assembly, with security forces placing barricades and barbed wire to prevent protesters from entering restricted areas. Talks between student representatives and the state government have so far failed to produce a complete resolution.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has appealed for dialogue and assured protesters that their concerns would be addressed. Some members of the state examination authority have also resigned amid growing pressure.
The protests follow a wider youth-led movement in New Delhi, where students had raised similar concerns over alleged failures in India’s examination system. The issue has increasingly become a major political debate as millions of young Indians rely on government jobs amid intense competition.
While earlier demonstrations in New Delhi targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government, the Jharkhand protests are directed at the state administration led by the opposition party.
Analysts say growing unrest among young job seekers reflects broader concerns over employment opportunities, recruitment transparency and trust in public-sector examinations across India.
