LAHORE (Web Desk) – The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has appointed Muhammad Abu Bakr as the new captain of the national hockey team, replacing Imad Butt as part of its preparations for the upcoming Hockey World Cup, aiming to strengthen Pakistan’s campaign in the prestigious tournament.

The decision was announced by the Pakistan Hockey Federation following an internal review of the team’s preparations and leadership structure ahead of the international competition.

According to PHF officials, the change in captaincy is part of a broader strategy to improve team performance and ensure effective leadership during the Hockey World Cup.

Muhammad Abu Bakr will now take charge of the national side as Pakistan looks to deliver a strong performance on the global stage and rebuild its standing in international hockey.

The federation said the decision was made after carefully evaluating the team’s requirements, overall strategy and future objectives before the start of the tournament.

Officials expressed confidence that Abu Bakr possesses the leadership qualities, experience and determination needed to guide the national team during one of hockey’s biggest events.

Imad Butt, who previously led the side, was relieved of the captaincy, although the PHF did not announce any other changes to the squad or management.

Federation officials thanked Imad Butt for his services as captain and acknowledged his contributions to Pakistan hockey during his tenure as team leader.

The PHF maintained that the leadership change should be viewed as part of routine planning rather than a reflection on the outgoing captain’s commitment or performances.

No additional alterations were announced regarding the coaching staff, support personnel or the final composition of the national squad.

Pakistan’s preparations for the Hockey World Cup have intensified in recent weeks, with players undergoing training camps aimed at improving fitness, tactical awareness and team coordination.

Coaches are focusing on strengthening both attacking and defensive combinations while working to improve consistency against higher-ranked international teams.

The Hockey World Cup presents Pakistan with an important opportunity to regain prominence in a sport where the country once dominated international competition.

Pakistan remains one of the most successful nations in hockey history, having won multiple World Cup and Olympic titles, although recent years have seen the team struggle to maintain its traditional status among the world’s elite.

Sports analysts believe strong leadership, disciplined performances and improved teamwork will be essential if Pakistan hopes to compete successfully against the leading hockey nations.

The appointment of Abu Bakr signals the federation’s intention to bring fresh energy and renewed confidence into the squad before the start of the tournament.

Players participating in the national training camp are expected to continue intensive preparations under the guidance of the coaching staff before departing for international competition.

The federation also expressed optimism that the team’s recent preparations will help improve Pakistan’s overall performance and produce encouraging results at the World Cup.

Hockey fans across the country have welcomed the announcement with anticipation, hoping the leadership transition will inspire improved performances and restore Pakistan’s reputation in world hockey.

The PHF said its primary objective remains building a competitive national side capable of consistently performing at the highest international level while developing young talent for future tournaments.

Further announcements regarding the team’s training schedule, warm-up matches and final tournament arrangements are expected in the coming weeks as Pakistan completes its preparations for the Hockey World Cup.
