WASHINGTON (Web Desk) –Panic gripped the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night when gunfire erupted near the main security screening area of the Washington Hilton, forcing United States President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to be rushed from the venue by Secret Service agents in a dramatic security response.

The high-profile annual event, attended by nearly 2,600 guests including senior government officials, journalists and diplomats, descended into chaos after an armed man allegedly opened fire on security personnel outside the ballroom.
According to US officials, a suspect carrying a shotgun fired at a Secret Service agent. The bullet struck the agent in an area protected by body armour, leaving the officer unharmed.
The shocking breach triggered an immediate lockdown, with guests screaming and diving beneath tables as heavily armed security officers stormed the hall.
Witnesses described scenes of confusion and fear as officers in combat gear entered the ballroom shouting for people to get down. Trump and the first lady reportedly ducked behind the dais before being swiftly escorted backstage and removed from immediate danger.
Cabinet members, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, were pushed to the ground and later evacuated one by one under armed protection.
Security personnel took positions on stage, some aiming rifles across the ballroom while others secured exits and swept the venue.
About an hour after being evacuated, Trump took to Truth Social to confirm he was safe and praised law enforcement.
“Quite an evening in DC, Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job,” he wrote, later adding that the first lady, vice president and cabinet officials were all unharmed.
The Secret Service confirmed it was investigating a shooting near the main entrance screening area, while federal authorities quickly apprehended the suspect.
The dramatic incident carried historic echoes, unfolding at the same Washington Hilton where President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded during an assassination attempt in 1981.
The venue, long associated with major political events and visits by world leaders, became the scene of fresh alarm as the prestigious dinner was abruptly cancelled.
Television coverage from inside the event was interrupted as reports emerged that the president had been moved to safety.
Guests described scrambling for cover, with some sheltering in restrooms while others remained under tables until security declared the area secure.
An early Trump campaign aide and several journalists at the event recounted scenes of panic as people rushed toward exits before being ordered to stay down.
Following the incident, Trump addressed reporters at the White House, calling the suspect a “would-be assassin” and suggesting the gunman may have intended to target him.
“I believe he was a lone wolf,” Trump said, describing the suspect as armed with multiple weapons and saying investigators saw no immediate evidence linking the attack to international tensions, including the Iran conflict.
The president also questioned security arrangements at the venue.
“We looked at all the conditions tonight, and I will say it’s not a particularly secure building,” he remarked, raising concerns about the historic hotel’s suitability for such high-risk events.
Federal prosecutors said the suspect would appear before a US district judge in Washington on Monday.
According to US Attorney Jeanine Pirro, the suspect is expected to face charges including assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon and using a firearm during a violent crime.
Trump also said federal agents were raiding the suspect’s California home as part of the ongoing investigation.
The shooting revived memories of the two assassination attempts Trump survived during the 2024 election campaign.
The most serious occurred at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he was wounded in the ear before the gunman was killed by security forces.
Another alleged plot was foiled months later at Trump International Golf Club in Florida, where an armed suspect hiding in bushes was arrested and later sentenced to life in prison.
Saturday’s security scare added a dramatic chapter to those threats and raised fresh questions over presidential protection protocols at public venues.
Despite the turmoil, officials stressed all senior federal leaders remained safe and the threat was quickly neutralised.
Trump later expressed hope the correspondents’ dinner could be rescheduled within 30 days.
What began as Washington’s annual night of political satire and media spectacle instead ended in gunfire, fear and renewed concerns over political violence in America.
