Widowed mother runs 1,600 metres barefoot in a sari in seven minutes to support her children

RAMGARH, India (Web Desk) A widowed mother from India’s Jharkhand state has captured widespread attention after completing a 1,600-metre race barefoot while wearing a traditional sari during Home Guard recruitment trials, demonstrating remarkable determination as she seeks to secure a better future for her family.

Kavita Mahto, a resident of Ramgarh district, reportedly completed the race in just seven minutes, comfortably beating the stipulated time limit of 10 minutes. Her performance, captured in a video that has circulated widely on social media, has drawn attention to her difficult circumstances and determination to provide for her children.

Unlike other participants who may have had access to sportswear and running shoes, Mahto took part in the physical test wearing a sari and without footwear. Despite these challenges, she completed the distance well within the prescribed time, according to information accompanying the viral video.

Her story has resonated with social media users, many of whom have praised her courage and perseverance.

A mother carrying the responsibility of an entire family

Behind Mahto’s remarkable performance lies a personal tragedy that has shaped her life over the past three years.

According to the account shared with the video, Mahto lost her husband three years ago. Since his death, she has been responsible for supporting her two young children and her elderly parents-in-law.

With no husband to share the financial burden, she has reportedly been working in other people’s homes to earn money and meet her family’s daily needs.

For Mahto, securing employment through the Home Guard recruitment process could provide a more stable source of income and help her improve her family’s living conditions.

Her participation in the recruitment trials reflects the determination of a mother who is pursuing an employment opportunity despite the hardships she faces.

The physical test has also brought her story to public attention, with the viral footage highlighting her effort to compete under challenging circumstances.

Opportunity through Home Guard recruitment

The recruitment drive in Ramgarh reportedly includes 284 Home Guard vacancies. According to information accompanying the video, the recruitment process also provides a quota for widowed women.

Such provisions can offer employment opportunities to women who have lost their husbands and face additional financial responsibilities.

For widowed mothers like Mahto, access to employment can be particularly important because they may have to manage household expenses, childcare and the needs of elderly family members without a regular source of income.

However, completing the physical test does not necessarily mean that a candidate has secured a position. Final selection depends on the applicable recruitment rules and any remaining assessment requirements.

Mahto’s reported performance has nevertheless brought attention to her determination to pursue the opportunity.

Social media responds to her determination

The video of Mahto running barefoot in a sari has attracted attention because it captures an individual effort to overcome difficult personal circumstances.

Her story has also prompted discussion about the challenges faced by women who become the sole breadwinners of their families after losing their husbands.

For many such women, finding employment is not simply a matter of career advancement. It can be essential to ensuring that their children receive food, education and other necessities.

Mahto’s reported achievement offers an example of how determination can help people continue pursuing opportunities despite financial hardship and personal loss.

At the same time, her circumstances highlight the importance of accessible employment opportunities and support systems for vulnerable families.

Beyond a viral video

While the video has drawn praise for Mahto’s effort, her longer-term prospects will depend on the outcome of the recruitment process and whether she secures employment.

If selected, a Home Guard position could offer her an opportunity to establish a more reliable income and reduce the financial uncertainty facing her family.

Her story also serves as a reminder that behind many viral moments are people dealing with challenges that extend far beyond what a short video can show.

For Mahto, the race was not merely a physical test. It represented an opportunity to move towards a more secure future for her two children and elderly parents-in-law.

Her reported achievement has struck a chord with viewers because it combines an extraordinary physical effort with the everyday struggle of a mother trying to provide for her family.
