October 18, 2007, was not merely a date in history. It was one of the darkest days in Pakistan’s political history, when hundreds of Pakistanis who believed in democracy sacrificed their lives while welcoming their beloved leader, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. It was the night when the streets of Karachi were stained with the blood of Bhutto’s Jiyalas, yet the flag of their ideology never bowed.

Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s return to Pakistan was an extraordinary event in the country’s history. After years of exile, when she returned to her homeland, a sea of people gathered in Karachi to welcome her. There was hope in the eyes of the elderly, the spirit of change in the hearts of the young, prayers on the lips of mothers, and a single passion among the Jiyalas: to stand by their leader and their cause.

This was not simply the homecoming of a political leader. It was the return of an ideology and a popular struggle that had given a voice to the deprived, courage to the workers, hope to the farmers, and faith to ordinary Pakistanis that the people are the true source of political power.

Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto knew that the road back to Pakistan was filled with danger. She had received threats, and the risks to her life were no secret. Yet, rather than remain away from her people, she chose to return and stand among them. Pakistan was not merely a country to her; it was the legacy of her father, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the home of her devoted workers, and the centre of her struggle for democracy.

The Night of Karsaz That Changed History

On the night of October 18, 2007, a tragedy unfolded in Karachi’s Karsaz area that would leave wounds in Pakistan’s political history that remain painful to this day. Two devastating bomb blasts struck the procession welcoming Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto. Approximately 200 people were martyred and more than 500 were injured.

Those who had left their homes to catch a glimpse of their beloved leader could never have imagined that the journey would become the last of their lives. A mother had lovingly prepared her son before he left home. A sister had sent her brother off with prayers. A wife had asked her husband to return safely. A child had no idea that the shadow of a father was about to disappear from their life forever.

Then came the devastation that turned celebration into mourning. The air echoed with explosions, injured people cried out for help, and the streets became scenes of bloodshed and destruction. The hands raised moments earlier to welcome their leader were now searching desperately for loved ones.

Hundreds of families saw their worlds shattered that night. The Pakistan Peoples Party lost devoted workers for whom politics was not merely a struggle for power but a profound commitment to an ideology.

The blood of the martyrs and Benazir Bhutto’s resolve

One of the most painful realities of the Karsaz tragedy was that, despite the devastating attack, Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto did not abandon her people. She knew that her workers had sacrificed their lives out of love for her and in the hope of a democratic Pakistan. Their sacrifices deepened her resolve and strengthened her determination to continue the struggle.

The people were at the heart of Benazir Bhutto’s politics. Having endured imprisonment, exile, and the immense sacrifices of her family in the struggle against dictatorship, she continued to believe in the people’s right to govern themselves. She envisioned a Pakistan where citizens could elect their representatives, the Constitution would reign supreme, Parliament would be strong, and no citizen would have to struggle endlessly for their fundamental rights.

The Karsaz tragedy could not extinguish that determination. Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto continued to attend public gatherings and pursue the struggle for the restoration of democracy. However, history took another heartbreaking turn on December 27, 2007, when she was assassinated in a terrorist attack in Rawalpindi.

Pakistan lost a great political leader, and the grief among the workers of the Pakistan Peoples Party was beyond words. The leader for whose homecoming the Jiyalas had laid down their lives at Karsaz had herself become a martyr, leaving the entire nation in mourning.

The Sacrifices of the Bhutto Family and the Loyalty of the Jiyalas

The history of the Pakistan Peoples Party is a history of sacrifice. Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto paid the ultimate price for his ideology and political struggle. Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto carried forward her father’s mission, endured exile, imprisonment, and constant threats, and ultimately sacrificed her life.

Yet this story of sacrifice is not confined to the leadership alone. Every chapter of this history carries the struggle of countless workers who sacrificed their homes, livelihoods, peace, and, in many cases, their lives. The martyrs of Karsaz are an inseparable part of this legacy.

These were Jiyalas whose political loyalty was not driven by personal interests. They stood with their leader because they believed in an ideology that championed the dignity of the people, equality, democracy, and economic justice.

Whenever the workers of the Pakistan Peoples Party remember their martyrs, their eyes fill with tears while their hearts swell with pride. Their tears reflect the pain of losing loved ones who never returned, while their pride comes from knowing that their comrades made the ultimate sacrifice for a democratic cause.

The names of every martyr of Karsaz may not be known to everyone, but their sacrifices can never be separated from the history of the Pakistan Peoples Party. The greatness of a movement is measured not only by its leaders but also by the countless unsung workers who refuse to abandon their convictions, even in the most difficult circumstances.

Sacrifices that history will never forget

The Karsaz tragedy delivered a powerful message to Pakistan: terrorism seeks not only to take innocent lives but also to weaken public courage, political freedom, and the democratic struggle through fear. Yet the Jiyalas of Bhutto demonstrated through their sacrifices that an ideology cannot be erased through violence.

The pain of the families of the Karsaz martyrs remains. Their loved ones cannot return, and the empty spaces in their homes can never truly be filled. However, the nation can honour their memory by sharing their grief, keeping their names alive in history, and working towards justice. Preserving their legacy and fulfilling the demands of justice remain our collective responsibility.

Questions continue to be raised about identifying those responsible for the tragedy and bringing them to justice. These questions must be addressed through transparent investigations, credible evidence, and legal proceedings rather than speculation. The families of the martyrs deserve justice, and their sacrifices must never be reduced to a single annual commemoration.

Karsaz still calls upon the jiyalas of Bhutto

Whenever we remember October 18, we do not merely recall a tragic incident. We revisit an entire chapter of our history: the struggle of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the courage of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, the people’s love for democracy, and the sacrifices of countless devoted workers.

Karsaz reminds us that democracy is not strengthened by constitutional words alone. Its foundations are strengthened by the courage and perseverance of those who stand firm for their rights, their principles, and their beliefs.

For the Pakistan Peoples Party, this day is an opportunity to remember its martyrs, pay tribute to their families, and renew its commitment to democracy. It reminds us that the bond between a leader and the workers is not merely political; it is a bond built on love, trust, loyalty, and sacrifice.

The martyrs of Karsaz are a source of pride from our past, a responsibility in our present, and a symbol of democratic struggle for future generations.

The true honour of their sacrifice lies in building a Pakistan where democracy is strong, the voices of the people are heard, the Constitution is supreme, and every citizen has the right to live with dignity, justice, and peace.

Today, we pay tribute to all those who sacrificed their lives while welcoming their beloved leader. We honour the mothers who lost their sons, the sisters whose brothers never returned, the children who lost the protection of their fathers, and every Jiyala who set an immortal example of loyalty to their ideology.

Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto lives on through her ideology, the love of her people, and every Jiyala who remains committed to keeping the flag of democracy flying high.
