LAHORE (The Tribune International) — Lahore police have arrested the prime suspect within 24 hours in the murder of a man whose headless body was found wrapped in a sheet in the Badami Bagh area, police said on Saturday.

The victim was identified as Muhammad Shafiq, son of Muhammad Munir, a resident of Nowshera Virkan in Gujranwala district, according to SP Investigation City Farhat Abbas.

Deputy Inspector General of Investigation Syed Zeeshan Raza formed a special team led by SP Farhat Abbas to identify the victim and arrest those responsible for the murder.

According to police, the victim’s head had been severed from his body, which also bore signs of torture.

Police said the suspect allegedly threw a copy of his stepbrother’s national identity card at the crime scene after the murder in an attempt to implicate his stepbrothers in the case.

The suspect allegedly removed the victim’s head and private parts and disposed of them in Muridke, police said.

The victim’s head and body parts were subsequently recovered on the suspect’s identification, SP Farhat Abbas said.

The victim’s son, Muhammad Nauman, identified his father’s body at the morgue.

Police forensic teams and the crime scene unit collected evidence and fingerprints from the crime scene. The body was shifted to the morgue for a post-mortem examination.

SP Farhat Abbas said the suspect was arrested through professional investigation and human intelligence.

According to preliminary information shared by police, the alleged motive involved a relationship with the wife of the suspect’s maternal cousin and a property dispute. The suspect allegedly murdered Shafiq to frame his stepbrothers and implicate them in the case, police said.

DIG Investigation Syed Zeeshan Raza said police would prepare a strong challan to ensure the suspect faced legal proceedings.

SSP Investigation Muhammad Naveed announced cash rewards and commendation certificates for the police team involved in the investigation.
