TEHRAN (Agencies) – Iran kept their FIFA World Cup campaign alive with a dramatic 1-1 draw against Egypt on Saturday, preserving hopes of a place in the knockout stage despite missing the opportunity to qualify directly from Group G.
The result sparked mixed emotions among supporters in Tehran, who gathered before dawn to watch Team Melli battle one of Africa’s strongest sides in a tense encounter played in Seattle. While disappointment followed the final whistle, many fans left believing Iran had done enough to deserve all three points.
The draw means Iran finish third in Group G behind Belgium and Egypt, who secured automatic qualification for the last 32. However, Team Melli remain in contention to advance as one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams, with their fate now depending on results elsewhere in the competition.
Supporters watched the match in packed public venues across the Iranian capital, waving national flags and cheering every challenge and attack. The atmosphere swung dramatically throughout the contest as hopes rose and fell with every major moment.
Egypt stunned the Iranian supporters by taking an early lead, forcing Team Melli onto the back foot. Iran soon had a golden opportunity to restore parity after the referee awarded a penalty, but experienced striker Mehdi Taremi failed to convert from the spot, leaving fans visibly frustrated.
Despite the setback, Iran continued to press forward. Their persistence paid off when defender Ramin Rezaeian found the equaliser, sending supporters into jubilant celebrations as belief returned that a famous victory remained possible.
The second half proved equally dramatic. Iran created several promising attacks while Egypt defended resolutely to protect the point that would secure their place in the knockout rounds.
Late in stoppage time, celebrations erupted among Iranian fans after Shoja Khalilzadeh appeared to score what many believed was the winning goal. However, the referee ruled out the effort, silencing the crowd and leaving supporters stunned.
When the final whistle sounded shortly before 9:00am Tehran time, the mood shifted from excitement to quiet disappointment. Some supporters headed straight to work after the early-morning match, while others lingered to discuss the result and Iran’s remaining qualification chances.
Many fans nevertheless praised the team’s fighting spirit.
“It was a good game, even though they were unable to prepare properly,” one supporter told AFP after the match. He added that Iran’s attacking display in the closing stages showed what the team was capable of producing.
A teenage fan also expressed confidence in Team Melli, saying the players deserved credit for refusing to give up after conceding the opening goal.
Another supporter described the result as unfortunate, arguing that Iran had matched Egypt throughout the contest and deserved more than a single point.
Iran entered the World Cup under difficult circumstances after months of disruption caused by conflict in the Middle East. The team’s preparations were affected by the regional war that erupted earlier this year, while travel and visa restrictions linked to the United States, one of the tournament’s co-hosts alongside Canada and Mexico, added further challenges before the competition began.
Despite those obstacles, Team Melli have remained competitive on the world stage and now stand one step away from making history. If results in other groups go in their favour, Iran could reach the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time.
The tournament has also attracted attention beyond football because it is the first World Cup to feature a participating nation that had recently been involved in armed conflict with one of the host countries. Although diplomatic efforts have eased tensions in recent weeks, the backdrop has added extra significance to Iran’s participation.
For now, Iran’s World Cup journey remains uncertain but very much alive. The players must wait anxiously for the remaining group-stage fixtures, hoping favourable results will extend their campaign.
Although victory slipped away in dramatic fashion, Iran’s spirited performance against Egypt has given supporters reason to believe that Team Melli may yet write another chapter in their World Cup history.
