TEHRAN (Agencies) – Iran kept their FIFA World Cup campaign alive with a dramatic 1-1 draw against Egypt on Saturday, preserving hopes of a place in the knockout stage despite missing the opportunity to qualify directly from Group G.
The result sparked mixed emotions among supporters in Tehran, who gathered before dawn to watch Team Melli battle one of Africa’s strongest sides in a tense encounter played in Seattle. While disappointment followed the final whistle, many fans left believing Iran had done enough to deserve all three points.
The draw means Iran finish third in Group G behind Belgium and Egypt, who secured automatic qualification for the last 32. The team’s preparations were affected by the regional war that erupted earlier this year, while travel and visa restrictions linked to the United States, one of the tournament’s co-hosts alongside Canada and Mexico, added further challenges before the competition began.
Despite those obstacles, Team Melli have remained competitive on the world stage and now stand one step away from making history. If results in other groups go in their favour, Iran could reach the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time.
