TEHRAN (Agencies) – Iran kept their FIFA World Cup campaign alive with a dramatic 1-1 draw against Egypt on Saturday, preserving hopes of a place in the knockout stage despite missing the opportunity to qualify directly from Group G.
The result sparked mixed emotions among supporters in Tehran, who gathered before dawn to watch Team Melli battle one of Africa’s strongest sides in a tense encounter played in Seattle. While disappointment followed the final whistle, many fans left believing Iran had done enough to deserve all three points.
The draw means Iran finish third in Group G behind Belgium and Egypt, who secured automatic qualification for the last 32. However, Team Melli remain in contention to advance as one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams, with their fate now depending on results elsewhere in the competition.

A teenage fan also expressed confidence in Team Melli, saying the players deserved credit for refusing to give up after conceding the opening goal.
Another supporter described the result as unfortunate, arguing that Iran had matched Egypt throughout the contest and deserved more than a single point.
Iran entered the World Cup under difficult circumstances after months of disruption caused by conflict in the Middle East. The team’s preparations were affected by the regional war that erupted earlier this year, while travel and visa restrictions linked to the United States, one of the tournament’s co-hosts alongside Canada and Mexico, added further challenges before the competition began.
Despite those obstacles, Team Melli have remained competitive on the world stage and now stand one step away from making history. If results in other groups go in their favour, Iran could reach the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time.
The tournament has also attracted attention beyond football because it is the first World Cup to feature a participating nation that had recently been involved in armed conflict with one of the host countries. Although diplomatic efforts have eased tensions in recent weeks, the backdrop has added extra significance to Iran’s participation.
