TEHRAN (Agencies) – Iran on Tuesday warned that it would respond “immediately and decisively” to any violation of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) reached with the United States, while dismissing reports that direct negotiations with Washington are planned in the coming days.
The remarks came amid renewed uncertainty over the future of the fragile understanding between Tehran and Washington following recent military exchanges and conflicting statements from both sides about the status of diplomatic contacts.
Speaking at his weekly press briefing, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Tehran would not ignore any breach of the agreement, warning that continued violations could jeopardise efforts to preserve the diplomatic process.
“We will not leave any action unanswered,” Baqaei said, adding that Iran’s armed forces had already demonstrated their ability to respond to what it considers acts of aggression.
He said any attack against the Islamic Republic or any violation of the memorandum would receive an “immediate and decisive response,” warning that repeated breaches would make it increasingly difficult to continue implementing the agreement.
No negotiations with Washington
Baqaei also rejected suggestions that Iranian and US officials were preparing for a new round of negotiations in Qatar.
He said an Iranian delegation would travel to Doha later this week, but clarified that the visit was solely related to discussions on implementing provisions of the memorandum and should not be interpreted as negotiations with American officials.
“We will not have any negotiations at any level with the American side in the coming days,” the spokesman said, stressing that the presence of US representatives in Qatar was unrelated to Iran’s delegation.
His comments contradicted statements from US President Donald Trump, who had indicated that a meeting between American and Iranian officials would take place in Doha after Tehran allegedly requested fresh talks. Iranian officials have consistently denied that any such meeting has been scheduled.
Focus on implementing the agreement
Iranian officials said their immediate priority remains ensuring that the memorandum’s provisions are fully implemented before any further diplomatic engagement is considered.
According to Tehran, key commitments include the implementation of agreed measures concerning sanctions relief, access to previously frozen Iranian assets and other obligations outlined in the memorandum. Iranian officials have argued that progress on these commitments is essential before broader negotiations can resume.
The latest tensions follow several days of military exchanges between the United States and Iran, with both governments accusing each other of violating the terms of the memorandum aimed at ending hostilities in the region.
Iran has accused Washington of breaching the agreement through recent military strikes, while US officials have maintained that their actions were responses to attacks linked to Iran and intended to enforce the ceasefire framework.
Diplomatic uncertainty persists
Despite the sharp rhetoric, both countries have publicly maintained that they remain interested in preserving the broader diplomatic framework established under the memorandum, although disagreements over its implementation continue to cloud prospects for renewed negotiations.
Analysts say the conflicting public statements underscore the fragile state of US-Iran relations, with both sides seeking to defend their strategic positions while avoiding a complete collapse of diplomatic efforts.
For now, Tehran insists that no formal talks with the United States are on the agenda, and any future negotiations will depend on Washington’s compliance with the memorandum’s commitments and the broader security situation in the region.
