GTA 6 performance debate grows as 60fps rumors divide gaming community

Fresh GTA 6 rumors have intensified debate over console performance, with conflicting reports suggesting Rockstar may launch without 60fps despite continued fan expectations worldwide

(Web Desk) – The debate surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6’s console performance has intensified after fresh reports and industry speculation raised new questions about whether Rockstar Games will deliver a 60 frames-per-second experience on current-generation gaming systems.

Although Rockstar Games has revealed several trailers and promotional screenshots showcasing the highly anticipated title, the company has yet to release extended gameplay footage demonstrating how the game performs during real-time exploration of its massive open world. The absence of official technical details has fueled widespread discussion across gaming communities.

Many players continue to hope that Grand Theft Auto 6 will support 60fps on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X. However, several gaming analysts believe Rockstar may prioritize visual quality over higher frame rates during the game’s initial release.

Recent screenshots published by Rockstar reignited the conversation after fans noticed differences in image quality compared with earlier promotional material. While some users argued the graphics appeared slightly toned down, others suggested the visuals looked too polished to represent actual gameplay captured directly from consoles.

Technical experts at Digital Foundry remain cautious about the possibility of achieving a stable 60fps experience. According to their analysis, the game’s advanced lighting, detailed environments, ray tracing effects and dense open-world simulation will likely place enormous demands on console hardware.

The experts believe the primary limitation lies in processor performance rather than graphics capability. While the PlayStation 5 Pro introduces improved graphical power over the original console, its central processing unit offers only modest performance gains. Because large open-world games depend heavily on CPU resources to manage artificial intelligence, traffic systems, physics and environmental interactions, the improvement may not be enough to double the frame rate.

Instead, analysts suggest Rockstar could introduce a 40fps performance mode for displays supporting higher refresh rates. Such an option would provide smoother gameplay than the traditional 30fps mode while preserving much of the game’s visual fidelity.

Rockstar has historically favored graphical realism over higher frame rates during console launches. Grand Theft Auto 5 originally launched at 30fps on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 before later receiving a 60fps update for newer console generations. Red Dead Redemption 2 followed a similar path by emphasizing cinematic visuals rather than maximum performance.

This history has led many players to believe GTA 6 could receive a performance upgrade after launch instead of on release day.

Adding further speculation, a Brazilian retailer briefly published a product listing claiming the game would be fully optimized for PlayStation 5 Pro with enhanced performance and smoother frame rates. The listing was later removed, and Digital Foundry dismissed the wording as generic marketing language rather than confirmation from Rockstar or Sony.

Meanwhile, the Polish gaming podcast Rock & Borys has claimed that Rockstar is actively working on a dedicated 60fps mode. According to sources cited by the podcast, the developer hopes to include the feature but may postpone it until after launch if optimization work requires additional time.

The podcast has previously earned credibility within the gaming industry after accurately reporting downloadable content plans for another major title earlier this year, prompting some fans to view the latest claim as potentially reliable.

Neither Rockstar Games nor Take-Two Interactive has officially commented on the ongoing rumors. The companies have also avoided discussing console performance targets, graphical settings or gameplay modes beyond highlighting improved immersion and visual quality.

Gaming analysts expect Rockstar to reveal additional technical details closer to launch as marketing activities increase. Until then, discussions surrounding GTA 6’s frame rate are likely to continue dominating gaming forums and social media.

Despite the uncertainty, anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 remains exceptionally high. Whether the game launches at 30fps, 40fps or eventually receives a 60fps update, industry observers believe it will remain one of the biggest entertainment releases of the decade, setting new benchmarks for open-world game design and technical ambition.
