PARIS (Web Desk)-As the football world counts down to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, all eyes are once again on two of the sport’s greatest icons — Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo — who are preparing for what is widely expected to be the final World Cup appearance of their legendary careers.
The tournament will mark a historic milestone, as both stars are set to become the first players ever to feature in six different World Cups. From teenage sensations in 2006 to global sporting icons nearly two decades later, Messi and Ronaldo have continued to redefine longevity and excellence in football.
After guiding Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022, many believed Messi had achieved the perfect ending to his career. The Argentine captain himself hinted that retirement might not be far away after lifting the trophy in Doha.
However, the 38-year-old has shown little desire to step away from the game. Since leaving Paris Saint-Germain, Messi has enjoyed a successful spell in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami, helping the club win the MLS Cup while continuing to shine for his national team.
He also led Argentina to another major title at the 2024 Copa America and remained one of the top performers during South American World Cup qualifying. With 13 World Cup goals already to his name, Messi could also challenge Miroslav Klose’s all-time tournament scoring record of 16 goals.
Argentina’s group-stage schedule appears manageable, with matches against Algeria, Austria and Jordan. The South American champions are once again considered among the favourites to lift the trophy.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo is equally determined to end his international career on a high note. Now 41, the Portugal captain remains central to his national side despite questions over his age and role in the team. Under coach Roberto Martinez, Ronaldo has continued as Portugal’s first-choice striker and leader.
The Portuguese superstar already holds the record for the most international appearances in men’s football with 226 caps. Although he has won major honours, including Euro 2016, the World Cup remains the one trophy missing from his remarkable collection.
Portugal will face Colombia, Uzbekistan and DR Congo in the group stage and are viewed as strong contenders for a deep run in the tournament.
Football fans could even witness one final chapter in the iconic Messi-Ronaldo rivalry. If Argentina and Portugal both top their groups, the two legends may meet in a blockbuster quarter-final clash in Kansas City on July 11 — a fitting stage for two players who have defined an era of football.
