LEEDS (Sports Desk) – Pakistan have suffered a major setback ahead of their opening Test against England, with captain Babar Azam ruled out of the match after sustaining an injury to his right hand during a practice game.
Salman Ali Agha has been appointed captain for the first Test in Babar’s absence, Pakistan head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed confirmed. The development comes at a crucial stage of Pakistan’s preparations for the England series and places additional responsibility on Salman to lead the side in challenging English conditions.
Babar suffered the injury while batting on the second day of a three-day practice match involving Kent County Cricket Club. He was struck on his right hand by a delivery, prompting the team management to have him examined by the team doctor.
Following the medical assessment, Babar was advised to leave the practice match and rest for the remainder of the game as a precautionary measure. His subsequent withdrawal from the first Test means Pakistan will enter the series without one of their most experienced and influential batters.
The Pakistan Cricket Board had earlier scheduled Babar to participate in the national team’s training session at Headingley Cricket Ground on August 17. However, his injury has now forced the team management to make changes to its plans ahead of the opening Test.
The absence of Babar is likely to put greater pressure on Pakistan’s batting line-up. The former captain has been a key figure in Pakistan’s Test batting for several years, and his experience against England’s bowling attack could have been particularly valuable in the conditions expected at Headingley.
