ISLAMABAD: The Senate on Sunday passed the 26th constitutional amendment bill amidst Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s boycott.
Following its approval at the upper house, the bill is expected to be sailed through at the lower house.
Earlier, the bill was passed by the federal cabinet.
Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the bill at the Senate.
Speaking in the House, Law Minister Tarar said all poitical parties, including the opposition, were consulted over the constitutional amendment bill.
Opposition members of the house, however, took exception to the remarks by government and bashed the bill.
PTI’s Ali Zafar, for instance, said the passage of bill would further widen the already-present reservations in the majority of people. After much wait and many rounds of dialogue, the government on Sunday finally presented the 26th amendment bill for its passage in the Senate session.
Presided over by Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the bill.
Tarar said all the major points of the bill was discussed with all political stakeholders including the opposition parties.
Earlier, the federal cabinet passed the bill and assented it to be proceeded to the both houses of parliament.
In his speech, Tarar said that a committee was formed on the speaker’s direction to review the constitutional amendment bill, and it was thoroughly examined. The bill has been included in the supplementary agenda, so it should be taken up.
