LAHORE: In commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) and International Human Rights Day, the Buzurg Dost Network (BDN) Punjab and the Foundation for Ageing and Inclusive Development (FAID) organized a seminar titled “Bridging Human Rights: Inclusion for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and Older People” on December 5, 2024.
Punjab, home to the largest proportion of Pakistan’s ageing population, faces growing challenges in addressing the needs of over 13.5 million older people, many of whom live with disabilities. Globally, 15% of the population experiences some form of disability, with this figure rising among older people.
The intersection of disability and ageing presents unique challenges requiring targeted solutions. This seminar served as a critical platform to amplify the voices of PWDs and older people, promote awareness, and advocate for disability-inclusive development in the province.
The event brought together policymakers, civil society leaders, disability rights advocates, and human rights experts to address the challenges faced by PWDs and older people in accessing equitable rights and services. The seminar emphasized actionable strategies for inclusive development and the importance of policy frameworks that meet the needs of these vulnerable populations.
The seminar commenced with a recitation and opening remarks by Coordinator of BDN Punjab Mr. Qaiser Iqbal. He shared the challenges faced by PWDs and older people in accessing their rights, he said that BDN is open for networking opportunities for stakeholders to collaborate and support inclusive initiatives for the betterment of old age people in Punjab. Shahzado Khaskheli, Head of Programs at FAID, who outlined the objectives of the seminar and its significance in promoting inclusion and human rights.
Amna Aftab, Founder & CEO of Hum Mashal e Rah Foundation, presented an overview of current policies protecting the rights of PWDs but there is no proper legislation for older people (senior citizens) in Punjab, recommended key areas for development of policy.
Muhammad Yousuf, Deputy Director of the Human Rights and Minority Affairs Department, Government of Punjab, provided a comprehensive update on the Punjab Human Rights Policy 2018, highlighting progress in actions aimed at protecting the rights of senior citizens and PWDs.
A dynamic panel discussion titled “Strengthening Collaboration for Inclusive Development” explored critical areas of advocacy and partnership.
