LAHORE: Customs officials at the Lahore Airport foiled an attempt to smuggle gold jewellery, diamonds, and mobile phones worth over Rs32 million on Wednesday, reinforcing their commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against smuggling.

According to Collectorate of Customs Airports, Lahore, a tip-off by Collector Tayyba Kayani who has just assumed charge of the collectorate led to the interception of a frequent passenger, Asif Shahzad, arriving from Dubai via Air Blue flight PA-417.

Upon a detailed body search, Customs officials recovered 1,628 grams (approximately 130.2 tolas) of gold jewellery, six diamonds, and five Samsung mobile phones, all concealed in an attempt to evade detection.

The seized items have an estimated market value of Rs32,023,584. The suspect, a resident of Pakpattan, has been arrested, and an FIR has been lodged to initiate further investigations. Authorities are now working to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the smuggling network.

Commenting on the operation, Collector of Customs Tayyeba Kaani said, “No one involved in smuggling will be spared. We are strictly enforcing our zero-tolerance policy to curb illegal activities at all entry points. Such actions not only harm the economy but also promote unlawful practices, which we are determined to eliminate.”

The collectorate has reiterated its commitment to combating smuggling in all its forms and urged citizens to report any suspicious activities. Further details of the investigation will be shared in due course.
