The talks were held at the chambers of National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, who facilitated the meeting between representatives of the government and the opposition. The discussions focused on the prevailing political situation and possible ways to ease tensions ahead of the PTI’s planned march.
According to the National Assembly Secretariat, representatives from both sides presented their respective positions and held detailed discussions in a restrained atmosphere. The next round of talks is scheduled for 2pm on Saturday.
The opposition is expected to formally present its demands to the government’s negotiating team during the next meeting.
The dialogue comes amid continuing disagreement over the PTI’s October 4 protest, which the party has linked to demands including the release of its founder, Imran Khan. PTI leaders have maintained that the protest plan remains in place while negotiations are under way. (Dawn)
Speaker Ayaz Sadiq said he was facilitating the process and emphasised Parliament’s role as a forum for resolving political disputes. He said his office remained available for negotiations and stressed the importance of dialogue in addressing differences between political forces.
The government delegation included Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah, Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry. PPP representatives, including Senator Sherry Rehman, Syed Naveed Qamar and Aijaz Jakhrani, also participated.
The opposition side was represented by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, Amir Dogar, former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser and PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja.
Speaking during a break in the negotiations, Senate Opposition Leader Raja Nasir Abbas said political issues should be addressed through meaningful dialogue. He said the opposition wanted the government to engage seriously with the issues under discussion.
He also indicated that the PTI’s protest call would remain unchanged until progress was made towards addressing the opposition’s concerns.
The negotiations are taking place against a backdrop of heightened political tensions. Government officials have warned that continued mobilisation for the October 4 protest could create further security challenges, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The possibility of imposing emergency measures or governor’s rule in the province has also been discussed by government figures. (Dawn)
Opposition leaders, meanwhile, have criticised the possibility of such measures and warned against steps that could further deepen political tensions.
The government had agreed to engage the opposition after meetings among senior leaders of the ruling coalition regarding the political and security situation. Adviser Rana Sanaullah had earlier confirmed that contacts with PTI leaders were taking place regarding the proposed protest. (Dawn)
With the second round of talks scheduled for Saturday, attention is now focused on the opposition’s formal demands and the government’s response. The outcome could influence whether the political parties reach an understanding before October 4 or whether the planned protest proceeds as announced.
For now, both sides have kept the dialogue open, leaving the next round of negotiations as the immediate avenue for addressing the unresolved political issues.
