MADRID (Web Desk) – Spain has announced the closure of its airspace to United States aircraft involved in the ongoing Iran conflict, Defence Minister Margarita Robles confirmed on Monday, signalling a further escalation in Madrid’s opposition to the war.

The move follows an earlier decision by the Spanish government to deny the US access to jointly operated military bases in the country. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has previously described the conflict as illegal, reckless and unjust.
Speaking to reporters, Robles said the same policy applies to Spain’s airspace, stressing that US military forces had been clearly informed from the outset that neither Spanish bases nor airspace could be used for operations related to the Iran war.
She reiterated that the government’s position is firm and unambiguous, maintaining that the conflict is both unlawful and unjustified.
Spain has emerged as one of the most vocal critics in Europe of US and Israeli military actions in the Middle East. The government’s stance has already led to tensions with Washington, with US President Donald Trump reportedly threatening trade measures after Spain blocked access to key bases, including Rota and Morón in southern Spain.
Prime Minister Sánchez has also been outspoken in criticising Israel’s conduct in Gaza, further underlining Spain’s strong opposition to ongoing military operations in the region.
