COLOMBO (Sports Desk) Pakistan will have a strong presence in the upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 after five players were selected during the tournament’s player draft, joining one pre-signed compatriot to take the country’s representation to six cricketers.

The draft, held on Monday, saw Pakistani players attract interest from multiple franchises as teams finalized their squads for the new season, which is scheduled to run from July 17 to August 8 across Sri Lanka.

Among the notable selections was all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz, who was snapped up by Galle Gallants in the platinum overseas category. The franchise further strengthened its pace resources by drafting left-arm fast bowler Akif Javed in the gold category, giving the side a two-player Pakistani contingent.

Colombo Kaps also invested heavily in Pakistani talent, bringing in wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Haris in the classic category. The franchise later added fast bowler Shahnawaz Dahani in the gold category, ensuring a blend of aggressive batting and pace bowling options in its squad.

Meanwhile, Dambulla Sixers selected pacer Mohammad Wasim Jr in the gold category. The franchise had already secured the services of opening batter Sahibzada Farhan before the draft by signing him as an overseas icon player, making Dambulla the team with two Pakistani representatives on its roster.

The inclusion of six Pakistani players highlights the continued demand for the country’s cricketers in franchise leagues around the world. Their participation is expected to add depth and experience to their respective teams while providing valuable exposure in one of South Asia’s premier T20 competitions.

The 2026 edition of the LPL will feature five franchises — Jaffna Kings, Colombo Kaps, Kandy Royals, Galle Gallants and Dambulla Sixers — competing for the championship over a three-week period.

Tournament organizers have confirmed that the opening match will be played under floodlights at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Grounds in Colombo. The venue recently gained attention after hosting its first T20 International during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year.

Colombo’s SSC Grounds will stage the first phase of the tournament from July 17 to 19 before the action shifts to Dambulla and later to Kandy. Following the completion of those legs, the league stage will return to Colombo.

The business end of the tournament, including the playoffs and the final, will be held at the iconic R. Premadasa Stadium. Organizers have also reserved August 9 as a backup day for the championship match in case of weather-related interruptions.
