The two-week truce between Iran, Israel and the United States is set to expire on 22 April, with no clear agreement yet on an extension. The ceasefire, which began on 8 April, has largely held despite sporadic attacks, including strikes targeting Gulf states and Israeli-linked sites.
Efforts are under way to organise another round of negotiations in Islamabad following earlier inconclusive talks. Authorities in Pakistan’s capital have stepped up security measures, signalling preparations for high-level diplomatic engagement. However, neither side has formally confirmed participation. U.S. Vice President JD Vance is expected to lead the American delegation alongside senior envoys.
Tensions remain high in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which has effectively been shut due to Iranian actions. The waterway, through which a significant share of global energy supplies passes, has seen attacks on vessels and heightened military presence. The United States recently intercepted an Iranian-flagged ship attempting to bypass its naval blockade, underlining the volatile situation.
Iran’s nuclear programme continues to be a major sticking point. While Tehran insists its activities are for peaceful purposes, Washington and its allies have demanded a complete dismantling of its nuclear capabilities. Iran has rejected such demands, maintaining its sovereign right to uranium enrichment.
With key issues unresolved — including maritime security, nuclear policy and regional stability — the coming days are seen as decisive. Without a breakthrough in talks, the risk of the conflict reigniting remains high.
A fragile Iran war ceasefire nears expiry as tensions rise over nuclear demands and the Strait of Hormuz, with possible Islamabad talks yet to be confirmed.
