NEW YORK (News Desk) – In an unprecedented move, Mexico has become the first country to allow the citizens to elect their judges at all levels.
This, as it sounds, is a first news of its kind.
The development was overseen by the outgoing president who, he said, could not withstand the current judicial system for serving the interests of the political and economic elites with no concern for the downtrodden.
The judicial reform was passed with a two-third majority.
The move, meanwhile, was protested by law students and court employees who warned that the public pressure on judged may compel them to give popular decision notwithstanding the legal loopholes.
The chief justice of Mexico’s Supreme Court cautioned: “Elected judges could be more vulnerable to pressure from criminals, in a country where powerful drug cartels regularly use bribery and intimidation to influence officials. The demolition of the judiciary is not the way forward.”
