LAHORE: The federal government and Jamaat-i-Islami Pakistan (JI) on Thursday agreed to constitute expert committees to recommend measures for reducing the petroleum levy and providing relief to the public.
The agreement was announced at a joint press conference in Lahore by JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, Federal Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah.
Under the understanding, expert committees will examine the petroleum levy and suggest possible measures aimed at easing the financial burden on consumers.
The development comes amid public concern over fuel prices and JI’s campaign against the petroleum levy.
The committees are expected to assess available options and make recommendations to the government on how relief could be provided while taking economic considerations into account.
The agreement signals an effort by the government and JI to address the issue through consultations following the party’s protests over fuel-related taxation.
