NARAN (Web Desk) – Police have registered a criminal case against four tourists who allegedly drove their pickup truck into the Kunhar River in Naran to record a TikTok video, an incident that ended in a dramatic rescue operation and renewed concerns over reckless social media stunts at tourist destinations.

Authorities said the four men ignored safety restrictions and entered the river despite prohibitory orders issued under Section 144. Their vehicle was caught in the strong current and swept downstream before local rescuers managed to pull them to safety.

According to police officials, the incident occurred a few days ago when the group arrived in Naran, one of Pakistan’s most popular hill stations, known for its scenic landscapes and fast-flowing rivers. Investigators said the tourists deliberately attempted to drive their Vigo pickup through the Kunhar River to create a video for TikTok.

Witnesses said the vehicle entered the river at a shallow point but quickly lost traction as the water current strengthened. Within moments, the pickup became trapped in the rushing water and began drifting downstream, leaving its occupants stranded inside.

Members of a local rafting team, who were operating nearby, immediately responded after noticing the emergency. Equipped with rescue gear and boats, they reached the stranded vehicle and safely evacuated all four occupants before the situation became fatal.

Rescue officials said the swift response prevented what could have turned into a major tragedy, as the Kunhar River is known for its powerful currents, especially during the summer season when melting glaciers significantly increase water flow.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sadaqat Khan confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated against the four tourists. Police registered a case at Naran Police Station for violating Section 144 and disobeying lawful public safety orders under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Authorities identified the accused as Sultan, Ali Usman, Mohsin Khan and Asif Ali, all residents of Sargodha. Officials said the investigation is continuing and further legal action will proceed in accordance with the law.

Police stressed that Section 144 was imposed to prevent activities that could endanger lives or disrupt public safety. Entering rivers with vehicles, particularly for recreational purposes or social media content, is considered a serious violation due to the significant risk involved.

District officials noted that incidents involving dangerous photography and video recording have increased at tourist destinations in recent years. Many visitors attempt risky stunts near rivers, waterfalls and mountain roads in pursuit of viral social media content, often ignoring warning signs and safety instructions.

Authorities warned that such actions not only endanger those directly involved but also place rescue workers at unnecessary risk. Emergency operations in fast-flowing rivers require trained personnel and specialized equipment, while every rescue mission consumes valuable public resources.

The district administration praised the courage and professionalism of the local rafting team whose timely intervention saved the lives of all four tourists. Officials announced commendation certificates for the rescuers in recognition of their quick response and dedication to public safety.

Tourism authorities have also appealed to visitors traveling to northern Pakistan to follow local regulations and avoid attempting dangerous activities for photographs or online videos. They emphasized that rivers, lakes and mountainous terrain can become hazardous within seconds due to changing weather and water conditions.

Safety experts recommend that tourists remain within designated recreational areas, obey warning signs and avoid driving vehicles into rivers unless specifically authorized under controlled conditions.

The latest incident has once again highlighted the growing influence of social media trends on risky behavior. Law enforcement agencies say they will continue taking strict action against individuals whose actions threaten public safety or violate legal restrictions.

Officials hope the legal proceedings and public awareness generated by this case will discourage similar stunts in the future, ensuring that Pakistan’s scenic tourist destinations remain safe for visitors while protecting rescue personnel from avoidable emergencies.
