PARIS (Tech Desk) –WhatsApp is preparing one of its biggest privacy-focused updates by introducing unique usernames that will allow users to communicate without revealing their phone numbers. The new feature, announced by Meta, is expected to enhance user privacy while making it easier to connect with individuals, businesses, and organizations through the messaging platform.

The upcoming system will allow every WhatsApp user to create a unique username that can be shared instead of a personal mobile number. Once the feature becomes available, users will be able to start conversations using usernames, reducing the need to disclose their phone numbers in many everyday situations.

Meta says the change has been designed to improve privacy, particularly for users who frequently communicate with people outside their contact lists. Instead of automatically exposing a phone number when joining a group, contacting a business, or messaging someone for the first time, users will have the option of sharing only their chosen username.

The company believes this approach provides greater control over personal information while maintaining the simplicity that has made WhatsApp one of the world’s most widely used messaging applications.

Unlike traditional phone-based messaging, the username system will function without a public directory. Users will not be able to search through lists of available accounts or browse suggested profiles. Instead, anyone wishing to contact another person must already know that individual’s exact username.

Meta says this design is intended to reduce unwanted messages, spam, and unsolicited contact while giving users greater confidence that their personal information remains protected.

The feature is expected to benefit individuals who regularly participate in large community groups, educational forums, business discussions, or online marketplaces where sharing a personal phone number may not always be desirable.

Businesses are also expected to benefit from the update. Companies will be able to communicate with customers using recognizable usernames rather than relying solely on phone numbers, making official accounts easier to identify while improving customer trust.

Meta has also confirmed that creators, organizations, and small businesses using Facebook or Instagram will be able to reserve matching usernames on WhatsApp whenever possible. The move is designed to create a more consistent identity across Meta’s family of applications and simplify brand recognition for users.

Because WhatsApp now serves more than three billion users worldwide, competition for popular usernames is expected to be significant. Similar to other social media platforms, usernames must remain unique, meaning not every user will obtain their preferred choice.

To manage the transition fairly, Meta plans to introduce a reservation process that will be rolled out gradually across different countries over the coming months. Users will receive notifications within WhatsApp once the feature becomes available in their region.

Industry analysts view the introduction of usernames as one of WhatsApp’s most significant updates since the platform added multi-device support and expanded business messaging features. The change aligns WhatsApp more closely with platforms such as Telegram, Discord, Signal, Instagram, and X, where usernames already play a central role in user identification.

Privacy advocates have generally welcomed the development, noting that limiting exposure of phone numbers can reduce unwanted contact, improve personal security, and lower the risk of identity-related scams. The update may also encourage more users to interact with businesses and online communities without sharing sensitive personal information.

Although Meta has announced the feature, the company has not yet disclosed the complete technical details governing username selection, availability, verification, or modification. Additional guidance is expected before the global rollout begins.

The introduction of usernames represents another step in WhatsApp’s ongoing evolution from a simple messaging application into a broader communication platform serving individuals, businesses, and organizations worldwide. By giving users more control over how they are identified online, Meta hopes to strengthen privacy while maintaining the secure messaging experience that has helped WhatsApp become one of the world’s most popular communication services.
