PARIS (Web Desk) – Germany’s Alexander Zverev stands one victory away from capturing the first Grand Slam title of his career as he prepares to face Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in the French Open final at Roland Garros.
After years of coming close on tennis’ biggest stages, Zverev has earned another opportunity to end his wait for a major championship. The German has previously finished runner-up in three Grand Slam finals and is now hoping his fourth attempt will finally deliver the breakthrough he has been chasing.
The path to the final opened significantly following the withdrawal of defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and the early exits of top contenders Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic. Zverev took full advantage, progressing confidently through the draw and reaching his second French Open final in three years.
Speaking after his semi-final victory over Czech youngster Jakub Mensik, Zverev said his focus remains on maintaining his level of performance rather than thinking about the title itself.
The 29-year-old’s journey at Roland Garros has featured both promise and disappointment. He suffered a serious ankle injury during the 2022 semi-final against Rafael Nadal and later endured defeat in the 2024 final. Earlier this year, he also fell short against Sinner in the Australian Open final.
Standing between Zverev and the trophy is Cobolli, who has enjoyed a breakthrough tournament in Paris. The Italian advanced to his first Grand Slam final after compatriot Matteo Arnaldi withdrew from their semi-final due to illness.
Cobolli enters the championship match with extra rest and confidence, having defeated Zverev earlier this season on clay in Munich. However, the German responded by beating the Italian in Madrid, giving him a slight edge in their recent rivalry.
Despite being considered the favourite, Zverev is aware of the pressure that accompanies another major final. With past near-misses still fresh in memory, including his dramatic loss in the 2020 US Open final, the German knows he must overcome both his opponent and the weight of expectation.
For Cobolli, meanwhile, Sunday’s showdown presents the biggest opportunity of his career as he looks to complete a remarkable run and claim his first Grand Slam title.
