New York (Entertainment Desk) – Rockstar Games has indicated that a physical edition of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) could become available after the game’s launch, although the company has not officially confirmed when a disc-based version will be released.
The update comes after pre-orders for the highly anticipated title revealed that the currently available retail editions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X include a download code inside the box instead of a physical game disc. The decision surprised many fans, particularly collectors who expected a traditional disc release alongside the digital version.
According to reports from gaming publications, Rockstar Support informed customers that the existing pre-orders are for the digital version only and that a physical copy would be available in the months following the game’s launch. However, the company has not published an official statement confirming the timeline or providing details about the format of that physical release.
The wording used in the reported customer support response has created uncertainty among fans. While it mentions a future “physical copy,” it does not specifically state whether Rockstar is referring to a Blu-ray game disc or another type of physical product. As a result, the company’s long-term plans for physical media remain unclear.
Industry observers believe Rockstar may be adjusting its release strategy to reflect the growing popularity of digital game distribution. In recent years, digital downloads have become the preferred option for many players, while physical sales have gradually declined. Even so, major game releases continue to attract strong demand from collectors who value boxed editions and physical discs.
Speculation about a later disc release gained further attention after a report claimed that GTA 6 could receive a physical disc edition in December 2026, only weeks after its scheduled launch. The report cited an industry insider who had previously suggested that the game would not ship with a disc at launch.
Despite those claims, Rockstar has not verified the reported release window. Gaming analysts have advised players to treat the information as speculation until the company makes an official announcement.
The absence of a disc edition at launch has disappointed a section of the gaming community, especially collectors and players with limited internet access who prefer installing games directly from physical media. Many fans also see boxed editions as valuable collectibles, particularly for one of the most anticipated video game releases in recent years.
Rockstar has already confirmed that customers who pre-order GTA 6 will receive exclusive in-game content through the Vintage Vice City Pack. The bonus includes a classic-inspired vehicle, exclusive outfits for protagonists Jason and Lucia, and weapon skins paying tribute to the iconic style of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Players who choose to wait for a possible disc edition may not receive the same pre-order bonuses if they become unavailable after launch, although Rockstar has not announced any details regarding future promotional offers.
At present, Rockstar has officially confirmed that GTA 6 will launch on November 19, 2026, and that Standard and Ultimate Editions are available for pre-order. The company has also confirmed that current retail packages contain a digital download code rather than a physical game disc.
Until Rockstar provides further clarification, reports regarding a later disc release remain unofficial. Fans awaiting a traditional physical edition will have to wait for an official announcement to learn whether GTA 6 will eventually be released on disc or if the company plans to continue focusing on digital distribution.
