WASHINGTON (Web Desk) – The long-awaited opening of the $4.7 billion Detroit-Windsor bridge, a major infrastructure project linking the United States and Canada, has been postponed just days before its planned inauguration.
The bridge, designed to strengthen trade and transportation between the two neighbouring countries, was expected to officially open following a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for Friday. Invitations for the event had already been issued, raising expectations that the cross-border route would soon become operational.
However, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority announced on Thursday that both governments had agreed to delay the opening to allow more time to address unresolved matters related to the project.
In a statement, the authority said that Canada and the United States had jointly decided to postpone the launch while “taking the necessary time to resolve any outstanding issues.”
No revised date for the bridge’s opening was immediately announced, and officials did not specify the nature of the remaining concerns that prompted the delay.
The development adds another chapter to the history of the high-profile project, which has been viewed as a critical link for one of North America’s busiest trade corridors. Once operational, the bridge is expected to improve the movement of goods and travellers between Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, reducing congestion and enhancing economic connectivity.
The delay also comes against the backdrop of earlier political uncertainty surrounding the project. In February, US President Donald Trump had threatened to block the bridge’s opening, introducing fresh questions over the timeline of the cross-border initiative.
