MEXICO CITY (Web Desk) – Co-hosts Mexico made a strong start to their 2026 World Cup campaign with a comfortable 2–0 victory over South Africa at Estadio Azteca, setting the tone for their Group A ambitions.
Mexico took control early and broke the deadlock in the 9th minute when Julián Quiñones capitalised on a defensive lapse to give the hosts an early lead. The goal settled Mexico’s nerves in front of a packed home crowd of more than 80,000 supporters.
South Africa attempted to respond with structured defending and quick counterattacks, but struggled to break through Mexico’s organised back line. Despite showing flashes of promise in midfield, they failed to register clear scoring chances in the first half.
The game shifted further in Mexico’s favour in the second half when veteran striker Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead in the 66th minute with a well-placed header, marking another milestone in his international career. ([AP News][1])
South Africa’s task became even more difficult after disciplinary setbacks saw them reduced in numbers late in the match, preventing any realistic comeback attempt. Mexico also ended the game with a sending-off in stoppage time, though it did not affect the final result.
The victory gives Mexico an early advantage in Group A and strengthens confidence as they aim to progress deep into the tournament, especially with strong home support and momentum on their side. South Africa, meanwhile, will need to regroup quickly ahead of their next fixture to keep their qualification hopes alive.
The match also revived memories of the 2010 World Cup opener between the two sides, which ended in a 1–1 draw, adding historical weight to this latest encounter.
