WELLINGTON (Web Desk) – New Zealand has reaffirmed the opportunities available to eligible international graduates through its Post-Study Work Visa programme, enabling students to remain in the country and gain valuable work experience after completing approved qualifications.
According to New Zealand’s immigration authorities, the visa allows successful applicants to live and work in the country for up to three years, depending on the qualification completed and other eligibility requirements. The programme is designed to help graduates transition from education to employment while supporting New Zealand’s workforce and economy.
Officials said the application fee for the visa starts at NZD 1,670, while most applications are processed within approximately four and a half weeks. The visa may also provide a pathway toward residence for graduates who later meet the requirements of New Zealand’s skilled migration programmes.
To qualify, applicants must have recently completed an approved qualification in New Zealand and submit their application within the required timeframe after their student visa expires. Most graduates must apply within three months of their student visa’s expiry, although longer application windows are available for doctoral graduates and certain students who continue into higher-level qualifications.
Applicants are also required to demonstrate that they have at least NZD 5,000 available to support themselves during their stay, meet health and character requirements, and genuinely intend to comply with the conditions of the visa.
The eligibility criteria differ depending on the qualification obtained. Students who complete a Level 7 bachelor’s degree or higher qualification after studying full-time in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks generally receive broader work rights. They are permitted to work for any employer in almost any occupation during the validity of their visa.
Graduates holding non-degree Level 7 or lower qualifications may also qualify, provided their programme appears on New Zealand’s list of eligible qualifications. However, these graduates are generally required to work in a position directly related to the field they studied.
Immigration authorities also noted that eligible visa holders may be able to support visa applications for their partners and dependent children, allowing families to accompany graduates while they gain work experience in New Zealand.
The government has also announced that from late 2026, eligibility for the Post-Study Work Visa will be expanded to include certain Graduate Diploma and bachelor’s degree holders under updated immigration settings, broadening opportunities for international students.
The application process begins after students successfully complete their approved qualification while maintaining a valid student visa. Applicants must then collect the required documents, including a valid passport or certificate of identity, recent photographs, proof of qualification and evidence showing they meet financial requirements.
Depending on the length of their intended stay, applicants aged 17 or older may also need to provide police clearance certificates to demonstrate good character. Documents issued in languages other than English must be accompanied by certified translations.
Applications can be submitted online or through paper-based procedures where available. Immigration New Zealand said applicants whose current visas expire while their applications are being processed may, in some circumstances, receive an Interim Visa allowing them to remain lawfully in the country until a final decision is made.
Successful applicants are issued an electronic visa, commonly known as an eVisa, outlining the conditions attached to their stay. Before entering New Zealand, travellers are also required to complete an arrival declaration covering customs, immigration and biosecurity information.
Education experts say the Post-Study Work Visa remains one of New Zealand’s key initiatives for attracting international students by offering graduates the opportunity to gain professional experience and potentially qualify for long-term residence. The programme is viewed as an important bridge between higher education and skilled employment, benefiting both graduates and the country’s labour market.
