Meta to introduce token-based pricing for WhatsApp Business AI from August 2026

MENLO PARK (Web Desk) –  Meta has announced a major change to the pricing structure of its WhatsApp Business platform, introducing a token-based billing system for companies that use its artificial intelligence-powered business agents. The updated pricing model will come into effect on August 1, 2026, replacing the long-standing per-message charging method for AI-driven customer interactions.

Under the new system, businesses will no longer pay a fixed fee for every message sent through Meta’s AI business agents. Instead, charges will be calculated according to the amount of computing power and data resources consumed while AI processes customer requests. The company said the new approach is designed to better reflect the actual resources used by businesses that rely on advanced AI capabilities.

The announcement marks a significant shift in how companies will be billed for automated customer service on WhatsApp Business. Businesses using AI to answer simple customer questions may experience relatively low costs, while those handling more detailed or complex conversations could face higher expenses depending on the AI resources required.

Meta said the token-based pricing model is intended to encourage efficient use of artificial intelligence while giving businesses access to more advanced customer engagement tools. The company believes pricing based on AI consumption offers a fairer method than charging the same amount for every message regardless of its complexity.

Alongside the pricing overhaul, Meta confirmed that it will reinstate fees on selected categories of business messages beginning October 1, 2026. Those charges had been temporarily suspended nearly two years ago as part of efforts to encourage businesses to expand their use of WhatsApp Business messaging services.

The company has not indicated any changes to pricing for standard person-to-person WhatsApp chats, with the new billing structure applying specifically to businesses using Meta’s AI-powered customer service agents and selected business messaging categories.

Industry analysts say the move reflects a broader trend across the technology sector, where AI-powered services are increasingly billed based on computing usage rather than fixed subscription or message rates. Similar pricing models have already become common among providers of generative AI platforms, cloud computing services and large language models.

For businesses, the new pricing system could provide greater flexibility by aligning costs with actual AI usage. Companies with lower AI workloads may benefit from reduced expenses, while organisations using sophisticated AI assistants for customer support, product recommendations or multilingual conversations may need to monitor resource consumption more closely.

Small and medium-sized businesses are expected to evaluate how the revised pricing affects their customer service strategies. Many organisations have adopted AI agents to provide round-the-clock support, reduce response times and automate frequently asked questions. The new billing method may encourage businesses to optimise AI prompts and workflows to improve efficiency while managing operating costs.

Meta has continued investing heavily in artificial intelligence across its platforms, integrating AI assistants into WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. The company views AI-powered business messaging as a key growth area, helping businesses automate customer engagement while delivering faster and more personalised responses.

The latest pricing update signals Meta’s effort to align WhatsApp Business with the growing demand for AI-driven services. As businesses increasingly depend on intelligent virtual agents, the company’s token-based billing model is expected to reshape how organisations budget for customer communication and AI-powered support.

The changes will officially begin on August 1, 2026, with additional business messaging charges returning on October 1, 2026, giving companies time to prepare for the updated pricing framework and review their AI usage before the new system takes effect.
