AJK police deny crackdown on Rawalakot protesters, reject social media claims

MUZAFFARABAD (Web Desk) – The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Police have rejected reports circulating on social media claiming that security personnel used force, shelling and gunfire against protesters in Rawalakot, describing the allegations as false and misleading.

In an official statement issued on Saturday, the spokesperson for the Inspector General of AJK Police said no operation had been conducted against protesters gathered at the sit-in near Drek Eidgah. The police maintained that claims suggesting law enforcement launched an action against demonstrators were baseless and intended to spread confusion among the public.

According to the spokesperson, several social media accounts have been sharing videos and posts alleging that police personnel used force to disperse protesters. The department said these claims do not reflect the actual situation on the ground and warned that misleading information could create unnecessary panic and tension.

Police officials further alleged that some individuals were recirculating old videos from unrelated incidents and presenting them as recent footage from Rawalakot. They said the purpose of sharing outdated material was to mislead the public, damage the credibility of law enforcement institutions and create uncertainty regarding the security situation in the area.

The spokesperson claimed that the online campaign was being promoted by individuals associated with the banned Joint Action Committee Awam. According to the police statement, the group resorted to misinformation after experiencing declining public participation in its protest campaign.

Authorities, however, did not provide additional evidence regarding the alleged source of the misinformation campaign, but emphasized that investigations into the circulation of false content were continuing.

AJK Police urged citizens to exercise caution before sharing videos, photographs or messages received through social media platforms. Officials advised the public to verify information through credible and official sources rather than relying on unverified online posts that could contribute to the spread of misinformation.

The department stressed that responsible use of social media is essential, particularly during sensitive situations involving public gatherings or demonstrations. Officials warned that false reports can quickly escalate tensions, cause unnecessary fear and interfere with efforts to maintain public order.

According to the statement, maintaining peace, ensuring public safety and protecting the constitutional rights of citizens remain among the highest priorities of the AJK Police. The spokesperson said all policing activities are carried out within the framework of the law while respecting the legal rights of peaceful citizens.

The department reiterated that law enforcement agencies remain committed to maintaining order through lawful means and continue to monitor the security situation across the region. Officials stated that any action taken by police personnel is conducted in accordance with legal procedures and existing regulations.

Public security experts note that misinformation shared through social media has increasingly become a challenge during protests and emergency situations. False or misleading content can spread rapidly, making it difficult for authorities and the public to distinguish verified information from fabricated claims.

Experts say digital platforms have made it easier for outdated or unrelated videos to be presented as current events, highlighting the importance of fact-checking before forwarding content. They advise users to rely on official government statements and credible news organizations when following developing situations.

The Rawalakot protest has attracted significant public attention in recent days, with discussions continuing across social media platforms regarding the demands of demonstrators and the government’s response. However, authorities have urged the public to avoid drawing conclusions based solely on unverified online material.

AJK Police reaffirmed that they remain committed to maintaining law and order while safeguarding citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly within the limits prescribed by law. Officials also encouraged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting false information that could threaten public peace or create unnecessary alarm.

The department concluded its statement by emphasizing that transparency, public safety and the rule of law will continue to guide all police operations, while urging citizens to remain vigilant against misinformation and support efforts aimed at preserving peace and stability across Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
