CALIFORNIA (Web Desk) – Google has officially announced that its AI-powered research assistant, NotebookLM, will be renamed Gemini Notebook, marking another step in unifying the company’s growing artificial intelligence services under the Gemini brand.
The company said the update is limited to a new name and logo, while all existing notebooks, saved research, and user data will remain unchanged. The rollout will begin on both web and mobile platforms over the coming weeks.
Google introduced NotebookLM as Project Tailwind during its 2023 developer conference. Since then, the research assistant has gained widespread popularity by helping users organize notes, summarize documents, answer questions, and generate insights from uploaded files. The service now has more than 30 million users worldwide.
The rebranding reflects Google’s strategy of bringing its AI products under a single identity. Gemini has become the company’s flagship AI platform, powering services across Search, Workspace, Android, and other Google products. By adopting the Gemini name, the research assistant joins other AI offerings such as Gemini Live and Gemini-powered Search features.
Google emphasized that the name change does not affect how the tool operates. Users will continue accessing the same features they currently use, including document analysis, note organization, source-based question answering, and AI-generated summaries.
Alongside the rebranding, Google announced broader access to its secure cloud computing capabilities. Previously reserved for AI Ultra subscribers and selected Workspace enterprise customers, the feature is now being extended to all Google AI Pro subscribers using the web version.
The cloud-based system enables Gemini Notebook to perform demanding computing tasks without relying on users’ devices. It can write and execute code, process large datasets, perform advanced mathematical calculations, and complete complex analytical tasks using Google’s cloud infrastructure.
Because these operations are handled remotely, users can benefit from advanced AI capabilities even on standard laptops, tablets, or smartphones without requiring powerful hardware.
Google said expanding cloud computing access is intended to make advanced AI tools more widely available while maintaining secure processing standards. The company believes cloud-based AI will help students, researchers, developers, educators, and business professionals complete technical tasks more efficiently.
Free-tier users will continue to have access to Notebook’s existing research and organization features. However, advanced cloud-powered capabilities will remain exclusive to paid AI Pro subscribers.
The company also confirmed plans to integrate Gemini Notebook directly into AI Mode within Google Search. Once available, users will be able to launch research sessions, organize information, and analyze search results without leaving the Search interface.
Google has not announced a release date for this Search integration but said it will become available as part of future updates.
Industry observers view the rebranding as part of Google’s broader effort to simplify its AI product lineup. Instead of maintaining separate identities for different AI tools, the company is building a unified Gemini ecosystem that offers consistent experiences across consumer and business applications.
The move also strengthens Google’s competition in the rapidly expanding AI market, where technology companies are investing heavily in intelligent assistants, research tools, and cloud-based AI services.
As demand for AI-powered productivity software continues to grow, Google is expanding access to premium capabilities while keeping core research functions available to free users. The company expects the Gemini Notebook branding and new AI Pro features to reach users worldwide through a gradual rollout in the coming weeks.
Existing users are not required to migrate their accounts or transfer data, as the transition will happen automatically once the updated branding becomes available on their devices. Google said additional feature announcements will be shared through future product updates as the Gemini platform continues to evolve.
