ISLAMABAD (WebDesk) – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday said that 446 lawmakers, including 125 MNAs, have failed to submit their mandatory statements of assets and liabilities by the December 31 deadline.
In a press release, the ECP notified that among those who missed the deadline are 26 Senators, 159 members of the Punjab Assembly, 62 members of the Sindh Assembly, 48 members of the KP Assembly and 26 members of the Balochistan Assembly.
The commission said parliamentarians are legally bound under Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017 to submit a copy of their assets and liabilities — including those of dependents — every year by Dec 31.
The ECP has now set January 15 as the final date for lawmakers to submit the required statements during office hours. It cautioned that those who still fail to comply will be suspended the following day, as provided under Section 137(3) of the Elections Act, 2017.
Last year, the ECP suspended 139 lawmakers for non-compliance, including two Balochistan Senators — Muhammad Qasim of BNP and Abdul Quddus of PPP — along with 16 MNAs and dozens of provincial assembly members. Suspended lawmakers were barred from attending assembly sessions.
