SUMMERY: A new animal welfare centre and school in Lahore’s Thokar Niaz Baig aim to improve working animals’ welfare and provide quality education to their owners’ children.

LAHORE: An animal welfare centre for working animals and a school for the children of their owners have been inaugurated in Thokar Niaz Baig, Lahore, under a Community Development Programme launched in collaboration with Brooke Pakistan and local social organisation GODH.
The project aims to improve the health and welfare of working horses, donkeys and mules while providing education and support to the families dependent on these animals.
Brooke Pakistan Head of Programme Dr. Mannu Chahar and Advocacy Manager Syed Miqdad Mehdi attended the inauguration ceremony as chief guests. They were warmly received by GODH Director Nazir Ghazi, Dr. Imran Kabir and members of the staff, who presented them with bouquets.
It was stated on the occasion that around 2,000 families, including approximately 300 households in the Thokar Niaz Baig area, are associated with keeping equine animals such as horses, donkeys and mules.
Brooke Pakistan and GODH are undertaking various initiatives to improve animal health and welfare and support the well-being of the families who depend on them.
Dr. Mannu Chahar met families keeping equine animals and learned about the challenges they face. He also visited different sections of the newly established school and received a briefing on the quality of education being provided.
He met children seeking admission to the school and interacted with them. Under the project, special emphasis is being placed on providing modern and quality educational facilities to children of equine owners.
