JERUSALEM (Web Desk) — Israeli President Isaac Herzog narrowly escaped a potentially serious aviation incident after a military helicopter carrying him was forced to make an emergency landing following a suspected bird strike shortly after takeoff.
The incident occurred after Herzog attended a memorial event at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. He was en route to northern Israel to offer condolences to a bereaved family when the helicopter reportedly encountered a flock of birds moments after becoming airborne.
According to Israeli media reports, the aircraft experienced difficulties after the apparent bird strike, prompting the pilot to initiate emergency procedures. The crew successfully carried out a precautionary landing, ensuring the safety of all passengers and personnel on board.
Israeli military officials confirmed that President Herzog, members of the flight crew and other passengers escaped the incident without injuries. Authorities also reported that the helicopter did not sustain any major damage during the event.
Following the emergency landing, the president was transferred to another military helicopter and continued his scheduled journey without further disruption.
A spokesperson for the Israeli military said the affected aircraft had been removed from service temporarily and handed over to technical and engineering teams for a comprehensive inspection.
While preliminary assessments point to a bird strike as the likely cause of the incident, officials have launched a formal investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and assess whether additional safety measures may be required.
Bird strikes remain a significant concern for aviation authorities worldwide. Such incidents occur when birds collide with aircraft during flight, particularly during takeoff and landing phases. Depending on the size of the birds and the point of impact, collisions can cause serious damage to aircraft engines, rotors or windshields.
Aviation experts note that military and civilian aviation agencies routinely monitor bird activity near airports and flight corridors to reduce risks. Nevertheless, unexpected encounters continue to pose challenges even for experienced flight crews.
The safe outcome of the incident highlighted the effectiveness of emergency aviation procedures and the professionalism of the helicopter crew. Israeli officials praised the pilot’s quick response, which prevented the situation from escalating.
The incident has attracted considerable attention in Israel, given that it involved the country’s head of state. Investigators are expected to review flight data, maintenance records and environmental conditions before releasing their final findings.
Authorities have not announced a timeline for the completion of the investigation.
