ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has issued a new public advisory cautioning citizens against the unlawful use, transfer and sharing of SIM cards, stressing that violations could result in legal consequences.
In its latest warning, the regulator reminded mobile phone users that a SIM card registered in one person’s name must not be handed over to another individual for use. According to the authority, such actions are considered a breach of telecommunications regulations and may lead to legal action.
The PTA further stated that any mobile connection involved in unlawful activities can be traced back to its registered owner. As a result, the individual under whose identity the SIM is registered may be held accountable during investigations, regardless of who was using the connection at the time.
Officials also reiterated that using a SIM card registered under someone else’s identity is strictly prohibited. The authority noted that maintaining accurate ownership records is essential for ensuring transparency and supporting law enforcement efforts when required.
As part of the advisory, citizens were encouraged to regularly review the number of SIM cards issued against their Computerised National Identity Card. Users were advised to immediately report or block any unknown, inactive or unnecessary mobile connections associated with their identity.
The regulator explained that monitoring registered SIMs can help individuals avoid becoming unknowingly linked to fraudulent or criminal activities carried out through unauthorised mobile numbers.
To further reduce the risk of identity misuse, the PTA urged consumers to obtain new SIM cards only through authorised franchises and official customer service centres. The authority said this practice helps prevent illegal registrations and strengthens safeguards against fraud.
The advisory forms part of ongoing efforts to improve digital security and promote responsible use of telecommunications services across the country. Officials emphasised that greater public awareness and compliance with regulations can play an important role in combating cybercrime and other unlawful activities.
The PTA also encouraged users to remain vigilant about their mobile connections and adopt secure communication practices to protect both their personal information and legal interests.
