DHAKA, Bangladesh (Web Desk) — Bangladesh is holding a landmark parliamentary election expected to reshape the country’s political direction after years of instability. The vote is the first since the 2024 mass uprising that removed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, making a decisive outcome crucial for restoring stable governance.

More than 127 million voters are eligible to participate across a population of roughly 170 million. Authorities say 2,028 candidates from multiple political parties are contesting seats nationwide, highlighting one of the country’s largest electoral exercises.

The electorate includes tens of millions of male and female voters, along with more than 1,200 registered third-gender voters. Around 5 million first-time voters are expected to play a decisive role after youth participation shaped the 2024 political upheaval.

Voting is taking place across nearly 42,800 polling centres, with roughly 800,000 election staff managing operations. Authorities have deployed close to 900,000 security personnel to maintain order and prevent violence during the vote.

Bangladesh’s parliament has 350 members, including 300 directly elected lawmakers and 50 reserved seats for women. Voting is being conducted in 299 constituencies after polling in one seat was postponed due to a candidate’s death.

The election is largely viewed as a contest between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, and an 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami. The results could determine the country’s political trajectory following years of controversial elections and opposition boycotts.

The previous three elections under Hasina’s administration were widely criticized as disputed or boycotted by opposition parties, making this vote a major test of democratic governance.

Bangladesh holds a decisive parliamentary election with 127 million voters, aiming to stabilize governance after the 2024 uprising, amid intense political rivalry and heavy security deployment.
