US-Saudi strikes in Iraq raise tensions as Red Sea security coalition takes shape

US-Saudi strikes in Iraq reportedly killed Iranian advisers as Saudi Arabia moves toward launching a multinational Red Sea coalition amid escalating regional tensions.

RIYADH (Web Desk) – US-Saudi military strikes in eastern Iraq have reportedly killed several Iranian advisers, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), intensifying regional tensions as Saudi Arabia prepares to launch a multinational coalition to secure the Red Sea against growing threats.

The latest military operation marks another significant escalation in the volatile Middle East, where confrontation between Iran and its regional rivals continues to expand beyond traditional battlefields. Reports indicate that the strikes specifically targeted locations believed to house Iranian military advisers and technical experts supporting armed groups operating in Iraq.

According to international media reports, around 20 Iranian advisers were killed during coordinated airstrikes carried out overnight. Among those reportedly killed were members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and military specialists responsible for supporting missile and drone operations conducted by Iran-backed groups.

Officials familiar with the operation said the targeted facilities were selected after intelligence suggested they played a key role in planning and coordinating attacks against regional interests. The strikes were reportedly intended to weaken the operational capabilities of armed factions equipped with advanced missile and unmanned aerial systems.

Iranian authorities later confirmed that four members of the Revolutionary Guard had been killed in Iraq. Officials stated that the personnel were deployed in Diyala province to assist with security arrangements for Arbaeen pilgrimage ceremonies, one of the largest annual religious gatherings in the region.

Iran described the deaths as a consequence of foreign military aggression and reiterated its commitment to protecting its regional interests. Senior officials warned that attacks against Iranian personnel or facilities would not remain unanswered, although no immediate response was announced.

The reported strikes come amid growing concerns over the expanding role of Iran-backed armed groups across Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen. Western and Gulf governments have repeatedly accused Tehran of supplying weapons, training and intelligence support to allied organizations operating throughout the Middle East.

Iran has consistently rejected those accusations, maintaining that it provides only advisory assistance to governments and resistance groups fighting terrorism and foreign occupation. Iranian leaders also insist that their regional presence is based on official agreements with partner governments.

Meanwhile, diplomatic attention has shifted toward Saudi Arabia’s reported plans to establish a multinational maritime security coalition focused on protecting navigation through the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Diplomatic sources say the proposed alliance would bring together dozens of participating countries with the objective of ensuring the free movement of commercial shipping through one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes.

The Red Sea corridor serves as a critical passage for global energy supplies and international commerce. Any disruption to shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait can significantly affect oil markets, freight costs and supply chains connecting Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Security analysts note that attacks on commercial vessels and maritime infrastructure have increased concerns among regional governments, prompting renewed efforts to coordinate naval security operations.

Officials familiar with the initiative say participating nations are expected to contribute naval assets, surveillance capabilities and intelligence sharing to strengthen maritime security and deter future attacks against commercial shipping.

The coalition is also expected to improve coordination between regional partners in responding to missile threats, drone attacks and other security challenges affecting international waterways.

Military experts believe the latest developments demonstrate the increasingly interconnected nature of conflicts across the Middle East, where events in Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon and the Gulf frequently influence broader regional stability.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts by several international powers to reduce tensions, recent military developments suggest that competition between rival regional blocs remains intense.

Analysts warn that further escalation could increase pressure on already fragile security conditions throughout the region, affecting both political stability and international trade.

Governments across the Middle East continue monitoring developments closely as diplomatic contacts remain active in an effort to prevent the current tensions from developing into a wider regional confrontation.

The coming days are expected to be significant as regional leaders assess the impact of the latest military operations and prepare for the possible launch of the proposed multinational Red Sea security coalition.
