Standard iPhone 18 may miss advanced AI features due to lower RAM

Apple's standard iPhone 18 could offer limited Apple Intelligence capabilities as reports suggest lower memory, widening the AI performance gap with premium Pro models.

CUPERTINO | June 29, 2026 – Apple’s upcoming standard iPhone 18 may not support the complete range of next-generation Apple Intelligence features, according to fresh industry reports suggesting the device will launch with a lower memory configuration than its premium counterparts. If accurate, the decision would further distinguish Apple’s standard and Pro smartphone models in the rapidly expanding field of artificial intelligence.

Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple plans to equip both the standard iPhone 18 and the expected iPhone 18e with 9GB of RAM. While this represents an improvement over the current entry-level models, it could still fall short of the memory required for the most demanding on-device AI functions expected in future versions of Apple Intelligence.

Industry observers believe Apple’s AI platform is becoming a major selling point for future iPhone generations as the company increasingly shifts toward features that process data directly on the device. Running AI models locally offers greater privacy, lower latency, and reduced dependence on cloud servers, but it also requires significantly more processing power and system memory.

Reports indicate that Apple may reserve the complete Apple Intelligence experience for devices equipped with at least 12GB of RAM. If that approach is adopted, users purchasing the standard iPhone 18 could receive only a limited selection of AI-powered features, while the more advanced capabilities remain exclusive to higher-end devices.

Analysts suggest the decision is likely driven by manufacturing costs and component availability rather than technical limitations alone. Memory prices remain relatively high, and increasing RAM capacity across the entire iPhone lineup would significantly raise production expenses. By maintaining a lower memory specification in its standard models, Apple may be attempting to balance performance improvements with competitive pricing.

The reported configuration would still represent a modest upgrade over the previous generation. According to supply chain information, the standard iPhone 18 will reportedly feature six 1.5GB memory chips, delivering a total of 9GB of RAM. Earlier expectations had pointed toward a larger jump to 12GB, but recent reports suggest Apple revised those plans to improve supply stability.

Despite the lower memory capacity, the standard iPhone 18 is expected to receive Apple’s next-generation A20 processor. Built using TSMC’s advanced 2-nanometer manufacturing technology, the chip is expected to deliver noticeable improvements in processing speed, energy efficiency, and graphics performance compared with the A19 generation.

Industry estimates suggest the A20 could improve CPU performance by around 15 percent while reducing power consumption by as much as 30 percent. Those gains may translate into smoother multitasking, faster application performance, improved gaming capabilities, and longer battery life for everyday users.

The new processor is also expected to feature a more capable Neural Engine dedicated to artificial intelligence tasks. However, experts note that even a faster AI processor may be constrained if system memory is insufficient to handle larger language models and increasingly sophisticated on-device AI workloads.

Apple’s premium lineup is reportedly expected to receive substantially more memory. The iPhone 18 Pro models and the company’s anticipated foldable smartphone—widely rumored to launch under the iPhone Ultra branding—are expected to feature 12GB of RAM alongside a more powerful A20 Pro chipset.

That hardware combination would allow Apple to deliver more advanced Apple Intelligence capabilities while creating another clear distinction between its premium and mainstream products. The strategy mirrors the company’s broader approach of reserving cutting-edge features for higher-priced devices before gradually expanding them to the wider product lineup.

Although the reported specifications have generated significant discussion, Apple has not officially confirmed the memory configurations, processor details, or artificial intelligence capabilities of the iPhone 18 series. As with previous product cycles, the company is expected to unveil its flagship devices during its traditional autumn launch event.

Until Apple makes an official announcement, the reported hardware details remain based on supply chain information and analyst estimates. Nevertheless, the latest reports suggest that artificial intelligence will play an even greater role in Apple’s product strategy, making hardware choices such as memory capacity increasingly important for consumers considering their next smartphone purchase.
