Spain train collision kills at least 30, disrupts Madrid-Andalusia Rail Services
At least 30 people have died after two high-speed trains collided in Spain, prompting emergency operations and the suspension of services on the Madrid-Andalusia route.
MADRID (Web Desk) – At least 30 people were killed when two high-speed trains collided in Spain on Wednesday, disrupting rail services between Madrid and the southern Andalusia region, according to rail operator Adif.
The accident involved trains operated by Renfe and Iryo and occurred shortly after 9 a.m. local time on the route connecting Madrid with Seville. The impact caused two carriages of the Iryo train to derail, while authorities began assessing the extent of the damage and casualties.
Adif announced that services on the high-speed line had been suspended following the collision. The precise cause of the incident and the full number of injured passengers had not been established in the initial reports.
Images broadcast by Castilla-La Mancha Television showed a derailed train on an elevated section of railway. Debris, damaged panels and twisted metal were visible on the embankment below the tracks.
Manuel Galan, mayor of the nearby town of Urda, said emergency responders had asked local authorities to prepare facilities, including a sports hall, to accommodate passengers and people requiring assistance.
The collision has renewed concerns about railway safety in Spain, following an earlier deadly accident involving high-speed trains on the same route. That incident, reported in January, killed 46 people after a train derailed and struck an approaching train near Adamuz in Cordoba province. It also prompted public debate over investment in railway infrastructure and maintenance.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed shock over the latest accident in a message posted on X, extending his support and condolences to those affected and their families.
Meanwhile, the prime minister’s official schedule was cleared for the day, while the opposition People’s Party cancelled its campaign events, according to reports.
Authorities were continuing emergency operations as investigations into the circumstances surrounding Wednesday’s collision got underway.
