KARACHI (Web Desk) – Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has reiterated that the people of Sindh have the sole right to decide the province’s future, while calling for measures to ease inflation, reduce electricity costs and improve access to affordable healthcare.
Speaking to the media in Karachi on Tuesday, Bilawal said the people of Sindh and their elected representatives had already made their position clear on matters concerning the province’s future.
His remarks come amid continued political debate over proposals concerning the creation of new provinces and administrative units in Pakistan. The PPP has repeatedly opposed the division of Sindh, maintaining that decisions affecting the province’s territorial status must be made through constitutional and democratic processes.
The Sindh Assembly also debated the issue in September, when Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah maintained that the province’s future could only be decided through its elected legislature. The debate reflected continuing differences among political parties over provincial boundaries and administrative reforms.
Inflation and unemployment remain major concerns
Addressing the country’s economic situation, Bilawal expressed concern over persistent inflation and unemployment, saying rising living costs were placing a significant burden on ordinary citizens.
He acknowledged that the federal government was working to bring inflation under control, while the Sindh government was taking measures to provide relief to residents facing financial difficulties.
The PPP chairman stressed the need for practical steps to address the economic challenges confronting households, particularly those struggling to meet essential expenses.
He indicated that reducing the financial pressure on citizens remained an important consideration for the provincial government, alongside improvements in public services and social welfare.
Spencer Eye Hospital reopens under partnership arrangement
Bilawal welcomed the reopening of Spencer Eye Hospital in Karachi under a public-private partnership, describing the facility as an important step towards improving access to medical treatment.
He praised the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) for taking practical measures to improve public services and said local governments needed to demonstrate a stronger commitment to meeting citizens’ needs.
The PPP chairman highlighted the difficulties faced by families who cannot afford expensive medical treatment, stressing that healthcare should be more accessible to people regardless of their financial circumstances.
Spencer Eye Hospital has undergone renovation and modernisation under a partnership involving the KMC and a charitable organisation. The upgraded facility is intended to provide free eye care and improve treatment services for residents, particularly those who cannot afford specialised medical procedures.
According to the Associated Press of Pakistan, the hospital has been providing free outpatient services and has expanded its capacity for eye treatment following its renovation.
Bilawal’s remarks highlighted the importance of strengthening public healthcare institutions and ensuring that improvements in facilities translate into accessible treatment for communities that need it most.
Bilawal proposes solar energy relief for Lyari
The PPP chairman also raised concerns over high electricity bills, saying power costs had become increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens to manage.
He expressed a desire to see the entire Lyari area shifted towards solar energy, which he said could help residents reduce their dependence on expensive electricity supplies.
Bilawal said the Sindh government was working towards providing solar energy facilities to people in Lyari. He also said the PPP would approach the federal government to seek relief for areas affected by frequent power outages.
The proposal reflects broader concerns about household energy costs, electricity affordability and the need to improve access to reliable power.
Solar energy could offer an alternative for households facing high bills, although the scale of any proposed programme, its funding arrangements and implementation timeline were not specified in the remarks.
Bilawal emphasised that the government needed to explore practical solutions to ease the burden on citizens while addressing problems associated with electricity supply.
No discussions held on 28th Constitutional Amendment
When asked about the proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment, Bilawal said no discussions had taken place between the PPP and the federal government on the matter.
His response came amid continuing speculation about possible constitutional changes and political consultations between government and opposition parties.
The PPP chairman did not announce any new position on the proposal during his interaction with the media.
Bilawal’s remarks covered three major public concerns: protecting Sindh’s political interests, improving access to healthcare and reducing the cost of living.
His statements also placed renewed emphasis on the role of provincial and local governments in delivering public services, particularly in areas such as medical treatment, electricity access and economic relief.
