LAHORE – (Monitoring) An anti-terrorism court in the Punjab capital has acquitted senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi in cases linked to the 9 May unrest, including the arson attack and siege of Shadman police station, as well as the torching of police vehicles.
The court’s verdict comes in connection with the violent protests that erupted on 9 May, during which the Shadman police station suffered significant damage. The incidents were registered under anti-terrorism laws.
In the same case, four other prominent PTI leaders – Dr Yasmin Rashid, Mian Mahmood-ul-Rasheed, Ijaz Chaudhry, and Umar Sarfraz Cheema – were handed 10-year prison sentences each.
The 9 May riots, triggered by political unrest, saw police property destroyed and clashes erupt in several parts of the city.
