Rehan Tariq detained at Lahore airport as NCCIA probes podcast content

By Our Correspondent

LAHORE : Renowned journalist and podcast host Rehan Tariq was detained at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport after returning from the United Kingdom and was later handed over to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in connection with an ongoing investigation linked to one of his recent podcasts.

According to reports, Tariq arrived in Lahore after a private visit to London when officials stopped him during immigration clearance. He was initially held by personnel from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), who reportedly questioned him for several hours before informing him that the NCCIA had sought his custody as part of an active inquiry.

Officials familiar with the matter said the investigation is connected to a recent podcast episode featuring religious scholar Jawad Naqvi. However, authorities have not publicly disclosed the precise allegations, the nature of the investigation, or the legal provisions under which the case has been registered.

Sources said the podcast was recorded before Tariq departed for the United Kingdom. Investigators are believed to be reviewing the contents of the discussion to determine whether any material violated Pakistan’s cybercrime or other applicable laws.

Reports suggest Tariq was unaware of any ongoing inquiry before returning to Pakistan. He reportedly learned about the investigation only after he was stopped upon arrival at Lahore airport.

Officials have not confirmed whether an FIR had been registered before his return or whether notices had been issued to him before his departure from Pakistan. The absence of official details has led to speculation on social media, although authorities have not verified many of the circulating claims.

Neither the FIA nor the NCCIA released an official statement immediately after the detention. Similarly, no official explanation has been issued regarding the evidence being examined or the stage of the investigation.

Legal experts note that under Pakistani law, individuals detained in connection with criminal investigations are generally required to be produced before a competent court within the period prescribed by law if further custody is sought. It remains unclear when Tariq will be presented before a judicial magistrate or whether investigators will seek physical remand for additional questioning.

The incident has attracted significant attention from journalists, digital content creators and social media users, many of whom are awaiting clarification from the relevant authorities. Several media organizations have also called for transparency regarding the legal basis of the investigation and the allegations under review.

Cybercrime investigations have become increasingly prominent in Pakistan in recent years as authorities expand oversight of online content published through digital platforms, podcasts, social media channels and video-sharing services. Officials maintain that such investigations are conducted in accordance with existing laws governing electronic crimes and digital communication.

At the same time, media rights advocates frequently emphasize the importance of balancing enforcement of cyber laws with constitutional protections related to freedom of expression and access to information. They argue that timely disclosure of charges and legal procedures is essential to ensure public confidence in the justice system.

The podcast at the center of the investigation reportedly discussed religious and social issues, though authorities have not specified which portions are being examined or whether any formal complaint prompted the inquiry.

Officials familiar with the matter said investigators are continuing to review available evidence before deciding on the next legal steps. They added that additional details may be released after the investigation progresses.

For now, the case remains under investigation, with authorities yet to announce any formal charges or provide a comprehensive account of the proceedings against Rehan Tariq.
