LAHORE – The Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) has intensified its enforcement campaign against tax evasion and irregular practices involving fake receipts, inaccurate records and non-compliance with electronic invoicing requirements by restaurants and food businesses.
According to a PRA spokesperson, several restaurants and food chains were found collecting sales tax from customers but failing to properly reflect the collected amount in their official tax records.
The spokesperson said inspections revealed discrepancies between customer bills and tax documentation maintained by some businesses. In certain cases, tax amounts were included in customers’ invoices but were not accurately recorded in the relevant tax records.
The PRA has taken action against businesses involved in such practices, imposing fines on multiple food outlets and issuing notices to those failing to comply with the Electronic Invoice Monitoring System (e-IMS), the spokesperson added.
The enforcement drive was conducted in Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha and Multan following public complaints and intelligence-based monitoring reports.
The authority has directed restaurants, food chains and other relevant businesses to ensure issuance of accurate tax invoices and maintain transparent financial records in accordance with tax laws.
The PRA spokesperson further clarified that food businesses with monthly sales of up to Rs500,000 are also required to issue invoices through the e-IMS system.
“Any misappropriation of tax collected from customers will not be tolerated,” the spokesperson said, adding that strict action would continue against businesses found violating tax regulations.
The PRA urged consumers to demand proper tax invoices at restaurants and food outlets to help improve transparency and compliance in the taxation system.
