LUCKNOW – A massive fire at a three-storey building housing a library and coaching centre for college students in the Indian city of Lucknow claimed at least 14 lives and injured four others on Monday, officials said.
The blaze erupted on the middle floor of the commercial building, located in a residential neighbourhood of Uttar Pradesh’s capital, before rapidly spreading to the upper and lower levels.
State Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak confirmed the death toll, saying 14 young people lost their lives while four others sustained injuries. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether all the victims were students.
Witnesses said several students jumped from the upper floors in a desperate attempt to escape the flames. Television footage showed thick smoke and flames engulfing the building as firefighters battled the fire.
The building contained a coaching centre, a library and a computer graphics section. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and announced financial assistance for the families of those killed.
Officials said strict action would be taken against anyone found responsible, as the incident once again highlighted concerns over fire safety standards and compliance with building regulations in India.
