ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to arrive in Pakistan on an official visit on Tuesday as diplomatic efforts between Iran and the United States enter a new phase following recent high-level talks in Switzerland.
According to diplomatic sources, President Pezeshkian is likely to hold separate meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other senior Pakistani officials during his stay. The visit is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing trade cooperation and discussing regional developments.
The anticipated visit comes shortly after the conclusion of the Lake Lucerne Summit in Burgenstock, Switzerland, where representatives of Iran, the United States, Pakistan and Qatar participated in high-level discussions aimed at reducing tensions and advancing diplomatic engagement.
A joint statement issued by Pakistan and Qatar described the talks as positive and constructive, highlighting significant progress in efforts to establish a framework for future negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
The summit was held under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which provides a roadmap for dialogue on key political and security issues. Participants agreed to establish a High Level Committee tasked with providing political oversight to the mediation process and ensuring continuity in negotiations.
Under the agreed framework, chief negotiators from both sides will regularly brief the committee and oversee working groups dedicated to nuclear issues, sanctions, monitoring mechanisms and dispute resolution. The initiative is aimed at facilitating the implementation of commitments reached under the memorandum and addressing outstanding concerns through dialogue.
Officials involved in the talks also agreed on a 60-day roadmap intended to guide efforts toward a comprehensive agreement. The timeline is expected to serve as the basis for intensive diplomatic and technical engagements over the coming weeks.
One of the key outcomes of the summit was the establishment of a direct communication mechanism between the parties. The channel is intended to prevent misunderstandings and reduce the risk of incidents, particularly in sensitive maritime areas such as the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies and commercial shipping.
The participants further agreed to create a de-confliction cell involving Iran, the United States and Lebanon, with facilitation from Pakistan and Qatar. The mechanism is designed to support the implementation of commitments related to the cessation of military operations in Lebanon and help maintain regional stability.
Diplomatic observers view President Pezeshkian’s expected visit to Islamabad as an important opportunity for Pakistan to reinforce its role as a regional facilitator and strengthen cooperation with Iran on economic and security matters.
Pakistan and Iran share a long border and maintain close cultural, religious and economic ties. Officials from both countries have repeatedly expressed interest in expanding trade, improving border management and increasing collaboration in energy and infrastructure sectors.
The expected meetings in Islamabad are likely to review recent diplomatic developments, regional security issues and avenues for enhancing bilateral cooperation at a time when international efforts are focused on reducing tensions and promoting dialogue in the region.
