LAHORE: The Institute of Engineers Pakistan (IEP) successfully conducted its elections for the 2026–28 term yesterday, marking the first polls in three years. Thousands of engineers across the country cast their votes via postal ballots, with a voter turnout of 26 percent, significantly higher than last year’s Pakistan Engineering Council elections, which saw only 13.8 percent participation.

According to the final results announced by the IEP Election Commission, candidates from the Engineers Pakistan panel achieved a clean sweep nationwide, winning by a large margin. Suhail Basheer was elected as IEP President for the next three years, receiving 3,487 votes, while his opponent Mian Sultan Mahmood secured only 374 votes, making the contest one-sided. The results were declared by IEP Election Commission Secretary, Engineer Amir Zamir Khan.
The victorious panel received backing from Federal Minister for Planning and Development, Engineer Ahsan Iqbal, while the opposing panel was supported by Engineer Wasim Nazir, chairman of PEC and close relative of former PTI Senator Ejaz Chaudhry.
Alongside the president, four vice presidents — Engineers Tahir Basharat, Cheema Ayaz, Khalid Basheer, and Masood Ali Khan — were elected. Chairpersons of Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad centers include Engineers Khizr Hayat, Farooq Arabi, and Sikandar Hayat, respectively. Successful candidates for the central council include Engineers Usman Farooq, Afzal Gouraya, Rizwan Mamoon, Aftab Islam Agha, among others.
Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal and Engineers Pakistan Chairman Javed Saleem Qureshi congratulated the successful candidates, expressing confidence that the newly elected leaders will play a vital role in advancing the engineering community and contributing to national development.
The election process was monitored by Deputy Director Irfan Yousaf and his team from the Punjab Industries, Commerce, and Investment Department, who praised the transparency and fairness of the elections.
