LAHORE – :In yet another crackdown on smugglers, the Customs officials at Lahore Airport successfully intercepted a smuggling attempt involving mobile phones worth Rs 14.5 million.
The operation was conducted following specific intelligence regarding an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of mobile phones from Sharjah to Lahore via Air Arabia flight No. 9P-501.
The suspected passenger, identified as Sajjad Ijaz, son of Ijaz Ahmad Chatta, a resident of Gujranwala, was stopped for thorough checking. His passport (No. ES1519093) and CNIC (No. 34101-2190909-3) were verified during the process. Upon investigation, two shopping bags containing mobile phones were discovered hidden in the toilets near the stairway of the international arrival hall.
Customs officials recovered a total of 54 mobile phones (new/used), with an estimated value of Rs 14,495,188. The goods have been seized, and the accused has been arrested. An FIR is being lodged to facilitate further investigation and identify other individuals involved in the smuggling network.
The operation was led by Collector of Customs Madam Tayyeba Kayani, with significant support from Deputy Collector Mudassar Rafique. Officials emphasized that strict vigilance and enhanced measures at Lahore Airport are playing a pivotal role in thwarting smuggling attempts. The collector said this successful operation underscores the collectorates’ commitment to combating smuggling and protecting the national economy.
